Dec. 14 TJnele Banv la going to search the remote corners of the world and Intensify bis efforts her at home to supply statistical and Interpretativa information for American farmers. Spurred on by the federal farm board and encouraged by the house the departappropriation commltte, ments of agriculture, commerce and tat are making plans to compile nd distribute data in the field of agriculture on a scale never attempted before. Industry and trade have bunt up chirms; the present decade a system of statistical Information, with the aid of the department of commerce and state, in an effort to make It poasfbla for business men to Inter-pr- e the signs of the times. The department of commerce has been given rands for this purpose generously by congress. Results have been beneficial to tbs object ot straightening out the old curves in manufacturing and merchandising, a brilliant example of this fact being the relatively little disturbance of basic business by the recent recession In stock market activities; the statistical position ot the basis was known to be sound. A major effort now wifl be to bund ton for agriculture a system to with facts just w have fu been done in the field of business and Industry, In this movement, however, the federal government will be called upon to play an even greater bepart than it has Inas the formerlacks cause agriculture, a whole, the organization which marks commerce and trade. In which field efficient trade associations do much for their own member along these lines. Valaabla Information Farmers, SappUed The department of agriculture has been doing much for the farmers In supplying statistical and Interpretative information, mostly here at borne, but some abroad, and the eign agencies of the department of commerce and the department of state have been helpful in this direc tion also, but much stronger em- haala Is to be placed on this work tne coming year tnan neretojor. Whatever la accomplished can be brought about only with additional funds to be supplied by congress and the house appropriations committee already has gone on record in favor of strengthening this service to agriculture and no substantial opposition Is anticipated In either branch pt the legislative body. As a start in that direction, the department of agriculture appropriation bill for the next fiscal year which was reported to the bouse Friday, contains Item to enlarge the activities ot the department tn crop and livestock estimates, both here and abroad and 1a lta market news ser- sup-jjU- iit Bridge Gets 13 Spades in First Hand JACK SOW (UP). The appropriation bfri carries an increase of $40,000 in the item for maintenance of the foreign service of the department of agriculture, which already is spending $113,000 lor that purpose. Six agents and a number of clerical assistants now are maintained abroad by this department. Diplomatic Statu Being Proposed. Companion bills have been Introduced in the house and the senate to give recognition and official status to the foreign service of the department of agriculture. Under the terms of the measure,' which will be pressed for early action, the principal agents would have diplomatic status. When this bill Is enacted Into law, It Is expected a special appropriation will be sought to enlarge by considerable proportions the foreign staff of the department, the federal farm board having recommnded an additional appropriation 1334,000 for the department of agriculture for this expansion. The farm board Is charged by the agricultural marketing act with the duty of keeping advised and making reports as to crop prices, experiences, prospects, supply and demand at home and abroad, and it has asked the department of agriculture to take charge of the service ot getting such Information.
