The tragedy probably comes under the classification of regrettable accidents, for which there can be no satisfactory explanation. Determination of the source or cause of the accident Is difficult tor the reason that all who might give enlightenment are dead. All of the men killed were known as careful and experienced workmen. They were skilled In their line and fully cognizant of the dangers to be encountered. Similarly, it seems that the company had taken every necessary precaution for the safety of Us workmen. So it is that It Is difficult to explain' or account for the accident. While an Intensive investigation has been launched, the cause of the accident may never be determined. The sympathy of the state goes out to the relatives of the victims of the tragedy, possibly ever-attenda- nt with a regret that greater comfort cannot be given them. The Treasury Audit city commission, or some rpHE A members of it, apparently have responded to growing impatience on the part of the general public toward the long delay in fixing responsibility --for the shortage In the city treasury and instituting action which should bring to justice the embezzlers. For the past four months an audit of tiie books has been going on, and about the only thing which this audit has developed Is the fact that the shortage amounts to about $90,000, or more. The audit of the past five years indicates that the bulk of the shortage occurred prior to that time. And it has taken the auditors approximately thirty days to each year, although.lt must be said in their behalf that possibly two .months of their time was consumed In responding to demands for Immediate data and In bringing to proper -- Teachers upholdstiiBrlght of teachers to smoke, dance, bob their hair, wear short skirts, go to the movies, play cards and get married in resolutions adopted at the annual convention. If theyre going to do all of these things, we wonder when they will find time to teach. But seriously, there Is no reason why a school teacher should not have the same degree of Individual freedom that is enjoyed by other workers. Nevertheless, it would appear that possibly the convention Is following a false clue. Not all workers do all of these things all of the time. Personal discrimination has much to do with It and somehow the American public looks for more discrimination among teachers than among other workers. There Is also the other slant on Individual freedom which comes from the employer, It seems to be the right of the employer to determine the character of help he will employ. ,JIe may not like women who smoke and refuse to hire them and he 'may even carry this prejudice to his male employees. He may be right or he may be wrong, but, whatever he Is, his right to select his own employees cannot be questioned. It is much the same with boards of education, only more so. These employers have a very high standard to meet,. Parents of school children are finicky on the subject of morals. They may be too exacting, but nevertheless the boards of education must give heed to their desires. So It Is that in the final analysis the employer will assert his right to choose his workers, and the worker who wants to work will exercise that sort of discrimination which Is most to his or her advantage. Meanwhile teachers are In much the same position as the rest of us when it comes to the thing we call personal freedom. Victory in, Defeat WASNT very long ago that rrWilliam T.
