I Grand Canyon bridge, officially known as the Hamblin-Hastcll- c bridg?, which is now being used over the great span of the Colorado river, Is six miles from the historic Lee's Ferry, and is the first bridge over the Grand canyon. Construction of the bridge is one of the engineering feats of modern bridge building. Its span is 61S feet in length and the total bridge length is 833 feet. It towers 467 feet above the turbulent waters of the Colorado river and was built at a cost of approximately 300,000. The new bridge makes possible a more nearly direct route from Phoenix. Ariz., to Salt Lake City, a distance by the new road of 771 miles, whereas before it was necessary to make a round-abotrip into a corner of California and then up by way s. of the highway. The present route from Salt Lake most direct in the way leads City south through Provo to Richfield, Panguitch, Kanab, across the Arizona state line to Jacob's lake, east through the beautiful forest some 18 miles to the old deserted Houserock ranch, where good water is available, thence over many dips and washes to Dave Lowry's new hotel at the end of the Grand Canyon bridge. 52 miles from Jacob's lake and 440 miles from Salt Lake. Locate Six Miles ... Below Lee'i Ferry. The present site of the bridge Is bout six miles below what is known as Lee's Perry and about four miles below the mouth of Parla creek. Many years ago a crossing was proposed about 1000 feet from the present site by the Denver & Rio Grande railway, and traces of the preliminary or'k still exist. Upon the original plans for the present bridge, congress appropriated $100,000. which was estimated to be one-ha- lf the cost, providing a timber floor was used. This appropriation be was to matched by a similar appropriation from Arizona. Subsequent surveys and examinations showed the estimate to be too low, and the final result was an appropriation by the Arizona legislature of $185,000, making the total amount available $385,000. This was still inadequate for the type of bridge recommended, and after bids' were taken other funds were added to mke the recommended arch type, with concrete floor, available. Only Bridge Within Six Hundred Mllea. As this bridge is the only one between Topock, Ariz., and Moab, Utah, a distance of 600 miles, the extra cost seemed Justified. Not alone by the geographic utility, but by the proposed bus and freight lines through the territory opened. The roads leading to the bridge will soon be included in the federal aid program in Arizona.'. The low bid of $310,000 was offered by the Kansas City Structural Steel company, and the contract awarded to that company June 17, 1927. The first excavation was done at ' the site during- the Deriod of deslen by a small crew working with hand drills. This work was done only on a narrow face on the proposed line of each shoe to determine the stability of the rock and the distance back from the rim which would be safe for such a span. The actual excavation was started June 23. 1927, on the north rim. after many days of hardships in hauling a compressor and .other equipment through the sand washes and ferrying it to the north side of the river. The excavation on both sides was completed by Novem- ber, 1927. and the concrete arch foundations commenced.
