T.mmm. Tmm Rickunl; i The Stribling-Sharke- y match, set for Miami. Fla.. Feb. 27. needs lots of steaming up. and Jack Dempsey, former world's champion and now promoting the match that the late Tex Rickaid had arranged, is trying to follow somewhat In the footsteps of Tex In getting out the usual "ballyhoo " First lh Madison Square Garden promoters wanted to call the bout off entirely, but Jack Dempsey prevailed on them to go ahead. Then came the talk of moving the fight to California, on account of the Florida governor threatening to close all the ciog race tracks around Miami. California clubs would never pay the guarantee, nor assume the obligations for the match, and for that reason the big clash, will take place in Miami as originally scheduled, unless .something unforeseen should happen. Jack Dempsey has assumed a big contract in handling the match, and deserves credit for tackling the same. He is being well supported by the Gaiden crowd and the fans are putting lor the to make a success of it. If he can split even on the venture it will be a big success. And in between times Promoter nunmeri nigazy. wno naci been a rival of Rickard s in New York, has been putting out very tempting bait for Dempsey to join him in promoting big shows In the biggest city in America, and at the same time trying to get Jack to make a comeback ?nd tackle the best heavyweight who can be produced within the next four months. If Fugazy, as intimated, has offered Jack a cool half million for his end. there may be some chance of going through with It, but the Garden will have the last say in the matter if any comeback is decided on. Feb. 0. The trouble is few of the fighters and managers really know what is meant by kidney blow, rabbit punch, pivot blow, etc. Daring the past few days inquiry was made of at least ten different fighters and managers, and not one of them could demonstrate these blows nor explain them. Some of the commissions differ somewhat regarding the above mentioned rules, but most of the big states are pretty close in interpreting them. Illinois and Wisconsin rules, in regard to the rabbit and kidney punches, say: 'Striking deliberately at that part of the body over the kidneys," and "The use of the pivot or rabbit punch." It might be well for all referees, when giving instructions. to Inquire whether the boxers and managers understand the rules and interpretations, and if not. to explain them properly That would save a lot of trouble and help the game of boxing. It might be well, too, to make it compulsory on all managers of fighters to study the rules and have them properly explained by the secretary of the commission or by competent referees.
