American home builders are gradually overcoming the long standing habit in the building Industry of allowing construction activity to withhibernation draw into a bear-lik- e during the winter season. Years ago there was plenty of reason for the lull in building. regular seasonal Equipment, raw materials and construction knowledge were Inadequate to cope with the trying conditions imposed by winter storms and cold weather. Today, with our modern machines and methods of construction, the former hazards of winter building do not exist. The individual who plans to build a home may proceed with actual building operations whenever he desires in place of waiting for Earlier spring months to arrive. completion of the home is possible because there is no summer scarcity of labor and materials to delay con struction. This should appeal to the hqme builder, who may have taken lengthy time in reaching a decision to build and is in no mood to con front further delay. Various Ways of Preventing Freezing. Contractors generally agree that wherever possible, it is good practice to complete excavations before cold weather becomes prevalent ana, also that winter work may be speeded up if footings and foundations are placed in the fall. With footings placed and foundation walls built construction of masonry buildings can go ahead regardless of weather Precautions against freezing of units, mortar, and the walls themselves can be taken by placing tarpaulins, canvas or other suitable coverings over them. A simple method of heating sand for mortar is to heap it over a section of old smokestack, boiler shell, metal culvert, or some other form of metal cylinder in which a fire may be kinThis dled.
