Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, December A terse verse from SENIORS NEWS by Nell Dalton Yo Ho Ho and shiver me timbers Talk about your cold Novembers I cant remember one so cold And I am getting pretty old! Or maybe cold just seems more bitter Than when I was a babysitter At the Center it is nice and warm To visit there would do no harm So come on down and have a bite Youll agree it tastes just right At our first November luncheon we were glad to find wed all survived that awful bitter north wind the day before. As I write this at the end of the month, I notice weve had storms most every weekend and brutal cold tempera- tures on Monday. However, were very grateful for the snow and moisture it brought. Stewart Gorrie brought a visiting California friend, Jonathan Dooley, to our lunches. He was helping Stewart with fall roundup chores. We were happy to meet him and wished him warmth while he was here. The regular Bingo lunch met on the first Tuesday afternoon for a good time and lots of prizes. Cosmo Mocchio won the blackout prize and chose a crystal angel candlestick holder from among the 8, 2004 - Page 16 Nell equines in her backyard corral. We are also surprised and saddened to see the 100 year old barn at Verdure being torn down. We will miss such a prominent landmark along our feeding everyone. Thanks, ladies! Our state dietitian, Bonnie, was very complimentary of the meal. Maxine Frost was our candy guessing game winner with an accurate guess of 316 pieces of Halloween candy in a Santa Jar (hows that for between Id like to say how nice it is to see those tattered and torn holidays?). American flags flying over San Its great to have Maxine and back with John Himmelburger us. Maxine does real well with her fancy cane carved by Bill Dunow, Jr. On the 16th we had a good crowd for our 3rd Tuesday Bingo. Kay Croft and Pearl Lewis joined us. Once they warmed up to our games, they did well. Always good to have new players join us. Vernonica Montano was one happy winner of the blackout prize. We enjoyed California visi- - tors Jeri Ann and Joe Harral at several of the lunches. It was good to have Edith Francom back with us - weve missed her at the lunches. We welcomed a new Monticello se- nior resident in November, Curtis Sweet. We like the name.. Its better than sour. Vicenta Torres brought her son Anthony as a guest, too. Its nice to have and get to know new folks and enjoy our old friends. On the 23rd, Martha and the staff served us a scrumptious turkey dinner with lots of de- licious fixins. Thanks so much. We extend our heartfelt sym- pathy to the families of Carl much traveled Highway 191 South. That construction at Devils Canyon is certainly changing the horizon for that drive. Juan County fire and gency services building have been replaced by new ones -looks great! On the final day of the month, we had our special birthday dinner of roast beef, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, veggies and fruit salad plus cake to celebrate all the special people with November birthdays. These included Wyman Redd, Sue Matern, Art Steele, George Jurasich, Barbara Trask, Mary Jane Thies, Ernie Sonderegger, Helen Wight, Ruth Hyde, Arliene Auble and Phyllis Applegarth - a good group! Also in Novem- ber, Jerry and Harry Randall celebrated another wedding anniversary. During the birthday lunch, Jenna LaRose from Scrapbooks Etc. came and showed us how to preserve photos and scrapbooks and to keep our mementos in good shape. Thanks! Well, were now into December and naturally, it will be a festive month. I need to send you my yearly Christmas greetings. Merry Christmas to Seniors far and near And to those who live right here Rex Mortensen, Vernon Schafer and Dixie Mahon, Scorup, who all passed away in November. Most of us made sure we went to the city offices and got our votes cast that 1st Tuesday also. Arlow Freestone conducted the AARP drivers safety course Thursday and Friday afternoons for those who signed up. We appreciate his doing this. It saves on our insurance. We took a trip to Cortez on Veterans Day and had a good time. Its always nice to get out and view some scenery and enjoy the day with friends. Movie Day on the 9th found us watching the comedy What a Girl Wants and having some good giggles. This day was another cold, snowy day so the spaghetti and green beans lunch hit the spot! Sure was good eating with mounds of home-mad- e cookies for dessert. We welcomed 20 guests from area senior centers who nuwere attending the trition seminar put on by the Utah State University Extension Services, and the State of Utah Dietary and Nutrition Agency.
