Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, February 12. 200.') - Page U Nine Broncos earn trip to 2A state wrestling tournament Nine San Juan Bronco wrestlers qualified for the 2A state tournament and two brought home first place medals at the Region 12 wrestling tournament February 8 in Manti. The Sanders brothers, Paul and Robert, each brought home first place medals to highlight the Bronco effort. Paul Sanders defeated Aldo in Gonzales of Richfield the championship match of the 112 pound weight classification. Robert Sanders earned a forfeit in the final match of the 130 pound class to take first place in the region tour11-- 5 nament. The Broncos also had two second place finishes in the tournament. David Lacy had a close match against Zack Brown of South Sevier in the final of the 199 pound classification. Lacy had Brown on his back for a good portion of t m match, however he was tun d and pinned to finish secono Adam Lacy had a tough r, to Bouchardt of South So suffering a pin for only his second loss of the entire season. Finishing in third place for t lie Broncos were Turner Keith -- at 140 pounds and freshman Noah Imel at 152 pounds. Fifth place finishers and also qualifying for the state tournament are Derrick Jones at 160 pounds, Willis Begaye at 171 pounds and Jeff Redhorse at 275 pounds. Courtesy photo (l-- r) Five Bucks qualify for state tournament by Anna Thayn It was the final week of tin1 for the Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers as they hosted the Region 13 tournament on Saturday. Visiting coaches commented that it was the best tournament they had been to all year, and the best region tourney they could remember. They praised the tournament organizers, volunteers, and the season regular booster club of Monticello High for their hospitality and a very successful and well run tournament. It was a good weekend for the small, young Buckaroo team. Of eleven team members participating, six wrestlers placed, five qualified for the state tournament, and one earned an Outstanding In the finals Butler faced Millards Logan Elkington. a 2002 state champion, and 2001 runner-up- . Butler put up a fight, but Elkington took control, put Butler in a tight hold, and pinned him. Chad Butler, at 130 pounds, and Luke Martinez, at 160 pounds, each finished with a third p act medal in their weight class. Butler came off a first round forfeit to face Han Oswald of Enterprise. It was a close and heated match, keeping fans on the edge of their seat. Butler was up nearing the end of the match, but Oswald got an escape and a penalty point and won the Butler was heartbreaker the only opponent to give Oswald a match, as ho won both other matches, including a finals upset by 10 points. Martinez won in the first before' a second round round loss sent him to the consolation bracket. Casen Eldredge continued his impressive season for another week. Eldredge, now at 42-- 0 on the year, cruised through the tournament to a region championship, and an Outstanding Wrestler award. Clint Monsen of Millard, forfeited the match, not wanting to risk injury to a healing knee before the state tournament. Eldredge beat Monsen, a 2002 state champion and 2001 runner-up- , a few weeks earlier in the North Sanpete tournament. It is anticipated the two will meet in the championship match at the state tournament Saturday. At 112 pounds, Travis Butler earned a second place medal.
