Bluff will take a new Yet, I continue to need health care and I have to look to the countys mandate from the state to provide it. Bluff is so small that we are used to getting leftovers, and a leftover clinic would be nice. No one is knocking at our door promising us a big city hospital on a small town economy. Lyman Grover Bluff, Utah medical center Dear Editor: If Blanding rejects a new county medical center for its own reasons, Bluff could sure use one. Not knowing how it takesuccessful the non-prof- over of Montezuma Creek Clinic will be, I am concerned about continued quality health care for my neighbors and me. We would be grateful if the county clinic was here, and the people of Blanding could use it if their new hospital complex doesnt come through. I support the countys health services board because I realize that rural health systems are heavily dependent on the payment policies of the federal government and HMOs. The current financial difficulties of our county health system seem to stem from drastic changes in the percentages and the lateness of payments from these entities in recent years, as much as from the prior management companys practices. Beware, property tax payers Dear Editor: I am writing this letter in hopes of helping some other citizen in San Juan County avoid paying hundreds of dollars to the county in property taxes that they dont owe. In 1994, we purchased some property north of town from a friend. We knew the land had been in green belt. We understood that there was a requirement at the time that in order to qualify for that status you had to have at least six acres of land. Our purchase was over the required acreage, therefore, we naturally assumed that it would remain in greenbelt. It was not until 1998, after purchasing an- other piece of property that we inadvertently found out that to reapply for green pays the bills for almost all of you have the patients in Montezuma belt status each time the propCreek, is one of the worst of- erty changes hands. I immediately went to the fenders. I think it may conoffice to get the necAssessors tribute to the quick demise of a new entity that is struggling essary paperwork and made to help its federally funded sure the property met all other community realize its dream of conditions. At that time I asked the staff in both the local control. Our health systems board Assessors office and the Rehas no control over such out- corders office if there wasnt side decisions, but they get our some way to inform people of criticism because they are here the necessity of reapplying for with names and faces we green belt status on property know. Its kind of like the they purchased which was in school system being criticized that category with the previfor state, federal, and court ous owner. I think probably I mandates. Thatsjusthowthe am not the only citizen who is uneducated in these kinds of system works. Indian Health Services, which grants the contract that matters, but who would occa- i to Represent the Dnterests of sionally like to buy real estate. Doesnt the County owe its citizens at least the courtesy to post this information in both County offices that deal with land ownership? I even suggested they might possibly ask anyone who comes into their offices if they knew the laws governing their purchase and what they needed to do to comply with the law. I also suggested that the County could include a statement concerning these matters on the tax evaluation they send out in the fall. As far as I know, no one has followed up on these suggestions or implemented these ideas. I would certainly have ap- Our Community. When I talked to the County Commissioners about how much I had actually over paid in taxes due to lack of information, one of them just laughed and said, THIS FALL AND WINTER If you are interested in being involved in either basketball or volleyball, please come to the Thanks! organizational meeting Buyers Beware!
