The Utah Geological Survey and Harken will analyze the geological and reservoir characteristics of five fields. The best candidates will be injected with water or carbon dioxide in an effort to boost oil recovery and extend the production life of the field. Dr. Lee Allison, director of the Utah agency, predicts production may be increased by 175 percent, or an additional 2.1 million barrels of oil per field. If the technology succeeds, said Ted Stewart, executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, industry could recover as much as 200 million barrels of oil that other-wis- e will be left behind.
