Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday November Around The Hat by Doris Valle I have an incredibly vocal house. When its stormy the wind whistles and moans and howls as though it would, at any moment, wrench the roof from over my head. There is a song Mariah, Mariah, about, They call the wind Mariah, Mariah the makes mountains sound like folks was up there dying. I dont know exactly what Mariah sounds like on my roof but she certainly indicates that if any folks are around they arent having much fun. I am told that in Okla- homa there is a stretch called cyclone alley. Undoubtedly Mexican Hat sits right in the middle of wild wind alley. I like the wind when Im cozy and warm inside my house, but there can be too much of a good thing. Last weeks storms got carried away. When I looked out my window, birds werent flying. They were being tossed through the air like so many dead leaves. Perhaps the sound of the SO, 1994 - Page 18 wind would not have kept me awake at night but my Shitzu, Gus, would wake and whimper and keep snuggling so close to me that I was in danger of be- ing pushed off my own bed. Ordinarily Gus sleeps on his blanket at the foot of the bed but he seems quite certain that thunder and lightning and wild wind are ogres intent on tearing small dogs to bits. I suppose things could be worse. Gus' sister, Lily, in com- Albuquerque gets pletely hysterical. If her humans, Dorothy and Paul, are not at home when a storm strikes she goes berserk. There is an eight-focement block fence around the back yard at their house. Lily lives inside the house with outside access through a doggie ot door. Inexplicably Lily scur- ries outside when a major thunderclap is heard. Somehow .she gets out of the yard, either over or under or around that eight-foo- t fence. The dog catcher picks her up after the storm passes. Shes always at least a mile from home. In Albuquerque the cost of retrieving a dog from the pound gets higher each time the same animal is incarcerated. Lily is getting very expensive. Dorothy has examined the back yard fence inch by inch but there seems to be no bolt hole through which Lily could escape. Blanding, received a Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award at a Court of Honor on November 25. Pehrsons eagle project was building a stairway between ledges at Arch Canyon and a turnaround roadway so the public can more fully enjoy the beautiful scenery. He coordinated his efforts with the Bureau of Land Management and The latest plan is for Dorothy to slip away and climb up on the roof of the house some day when a storm is pending so that she can catch Lily in the act. If she knew how Lily gets out she could bar the way. Im not sure of the plan. I picture Dorothy balancing on the edge of the roof as the wind howls and rain and thunder and lightening attack her. The other problem with Mexican Hat wind is its tendency to be all sound and fury signifying nothing but blowing sand. This time we finally got some snow. the Trust coffers there isnt going to be any land management. Life shore gets tejous, No matter how much I hate Public notice winter, any moisture is sewer systems at the insistence of certain governing agencies. We got a combination of grants and loans to do so. In the beginning, utility upgrading looked like a good idea. Now we have to keep improving the system because we have become a public utility. This means more loans, except we don't qualify for funds unless everyone in town antes up with a greater monthly payment for water. Then we get a loan and we have to raise water rates again to cover the payment on the loan. The sewer system is the same song, second verse, same as the first. Originally we had to have more efficient water and sewer systems in order to cover population growth. Town utilities costs would lower as the tab was divided among more people. Something went wrong. We got everything ready for a party and no one came. We still look out on a barren area which is controlled by the BLM andor the Ellis Goodridge Trust. I dont know why BLM refuses to turn any land loose, but Pat and Robert Von Khrum who control the Ellis Goodridge Trust have indicated they would be interested in land development if they could generate enough income in Mexican Hat. I think were in a which comes first the chicken or the egg situation. Without land development no. no- ticeable amount of money is going to be generated and without money flowing into grandson of Jack and Anna Pehrson.
