Warren Bennis, a recognized authority on the subject of leadership, writes a leader is one who commits people to action, who converts followers into leaders, and who may convert leaders into agents of change. The Four Comers region is no different than the rest of the world as it faces increasingly complex issues and a vast number of possible solutions for those issues. The amount of information in the world doubles at least every ten years, and changing technology impacts us daily in the workplace and at home. Dr. Joel Jones, President of Fort Lewis College and an active supporter of leadership development throughout the basin, wrote in a recent Four Comers Business Journal column: Todays leader must be a compulsive learner, one who confronts complexity and is comfortable with ambiguity, but one who realizes that issues must be addressed, that decisions must be made, and that ambiguity does not preclude ensure the success of these vital programs, so needed in our communities. The programs are based on a similar model, which is effective primarily because local people in the county design the curriculum, finance the programs, and use graduates from the previous class to work with the new class members. Leadership Montezuma (CO), Leadership San Juan (NM), and Leadership La Plata (CO) are programs operating now that give information and skills to current and future leaders in their respective counties. Each of these programs has a local base that provides continuity and support for the leadership development efforts. Leadership Montezuma, the newest member, works through the Cortez Chamber of Commerce and Lana Leonard, Executive Director. Leadership San Juan, is based at San Juan College and has Maij Black, Assistant to the President, as the principal contact with President Jim Henderson being a key supporter. Leadership La Plata is supported through the efforts of the Durango Area Chamber and Resort Association, and has Jane Zimmerman, Executive Director, and Mary Joslin, Associate, as principal contacts.
