Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday February 24, 1993 Page Around The Hal m by Doris Valle was not sure this Column would be forthcoming because yesterday my comI puter again indicated its displeasure with life in Mexican Hat. I was just do- ing my thing and suddenly there appeared a series of odd little characters -- something like diamonds and clubs and paper clips and worms. The discouraging aspect is that these symbols appeared as if by magic on my screen but the printer refused to be associated with such frivolous beings. There I was in the middle of some profound observation on life and the printer balked leaving my thought half unthunk. I deleted and they moved somewhere else. I turned the printer off and on. I turned the computer off and on. I moved to another file. The tenacious little tures hung on. I imagined them dancing in the middle of my words, sticking their crea- tongues out at me. I turned everything off and took two aspirin. Ah, Donna, Donna, my dearly beloved daughter Donna. How could you go off and leave your elderly mother at the mercy of modern technology? Donna was a professional computer consultant. She worked mostly with individuals and small businesses and she was very good. Only Donna could talk me through my trials and tribulations at a computer keyboard. In fact she 12 gave me credit for much of her success. I learned to be a consultant by working with my mother. Nobody could possibly get into more trouble than my mother did. I have a row of fat computer books chock full of in- formation. Ive never read them. Those pages were not written for someone in computer kindergarten. So the last time Donna was here on vacation she spent hours writing detailed instructions in a notebook. Yesterday when I was so upset I got the notebook and tried to find something about removing gremlins from my screen, Darling, but your handwriting brought back too many memories. Last night I dreamed we were in the hospital in Chicago. We were walking down the hall together. You were wearing my fuzzy bedroom slippers because your feet were so swollen you couldnt get your own slippers on. We walked hand in hand with you pushing the IV pole. Interferon and Inter-leuke- n II. All the nurses we knew were there, promenading with us, saying hello. Remember Mae? She was the one who came flying in the door one night as I came dashing out, trying to get that big old thing that controlled the IV dosage out the door because you were, briefly, asleep and the thing was beeping. Someone had left it on a chair after the last treatment for the night Agricultural Conservation Funds Funds totaling $81,668 have been allocated for the San Juan County 1993 Agricultural conservation Pro-gram(AC- P) administered by the Agricultural Stabal-izatio- n and Conservation Service. the San Juan County ASCS office. Mae gasped in horror. Youve pulled out all your needles, she said. She thought I was the patient, gone berserk. We all laughed about that the next day. As usual you were worried, a little conDid I get my medifused. cation at 4:00 oclock? you asked Mae. Honey, yawl got everything for sure. Yawl dont heads gonna roll. Right out that doah. The little English girl was there. The one who came when your heart began racing one night. Remember how she was trying to take your pulse and I asked how fast it was. She dropped your wrist and ran, saying, I dont know. Its too fast to count. The room was suddenly full of young men in white coats. You were angry becuase nobody would tell us anything. After they moved you to a monitored bed on another floor the heart ward it was that very small RN who came finally through the door of your room, pushing my bed, folded on end. She had not been able to get anyone from housekeeping so, sweating and irate, she showed up with it so that I - could rest. You couldnt - vorite rock. Hear the water. Clear and sparkling in the sun. Hear it flow gently, gently... You did finally rest but I think it was just the sound of my voice. Somehow a vi- sualization of the muddy old San Juan doesnt seem soothing. I hated to wake this morn- ing and know you were gone. But of course you are not really gone even though I cannot touch your hand or hear your voice. You will always be with me in my heart. Love is eternal. The allocation was based - conserve water, improve water quality and install other conservation measures.
