Show . NORTHERN NEWS by William Pierce There has been some improvements made at the Rattlesnake' Ranch ponds recently. The large reservoir, which provides irrigation for the ranch, received a large number of fish this past Tuesday. Ron Barnett has established the Rattlesnake Fishing Club and stocked the reservoirs with trout. Ron hopes to improve the fishing at the ranch sites. Ron and members of the club paid for the stockers that were transported from a hatchery in central Utah. ' Tuesday was a wet and rainy day and, according to Ron, they had to put chains on the delivery trucks tires to get in and out of the reservoir, but he said all the fish got unloaded and were ' in good shape. With the drought this year fishing looks to be fairly poor on the La Sal Mountain. This should not affect club plans however as these ponds are continuously fed by a spring. At the present time all of the memberships have been sold and the club is not accepting applications for membership. Individuals from Moab and as far out as Dove Creek have joined the club and have plans - -- for a number of fishing derbys at the ponds, fton said that the past few years have shown a' decrease in good fishing on the southern slope of the La Sals and hopes that his venture might be an example of what other private sportsmen could accomplish. .The Horse program for the coming 1990 season has been hammered out. I say hammered out because San Juan County will be the only county in the state this year to try a new program. In the past, 4-- H the program has dealt with arena horseshows. Last year Jim Keyes tried a horse-camon the Blues which met with good success and prompted this years changes. The program will have two divisions this year. The horse-show- s will continue as in the , past, and will constitute one division. The new area is titled Horse Management, and will include two task areas this year. The youth will be instructed in horse care in field use, and tack care. There are plans for two trail rides and a horse camp. During these outings the youth will be judged according to instructions they have received, and will be awarded at the end of the year. Each of the two divisions will receive awards, and the 4-- H p whole of the 4-- H All-aroun- awards. To be d will be given d the eligible for the youth in each age group must take part in at least three of the five total activities offered. This new design in the .program is to offer to those youth, who may not be interested in horseshows, a chance' to learn about programs and still get the credit in the overall program.
