Show 1 ' f A THE 'SAN 'JUAN RECORD Wednesday' A Hospital contracts for regular service of orthopedic surgeon Health care services in San Juan County will be upgraded with the services of an orthopedic surgeon and the addition to the hospital staff of a lab manager. Larry Putnam, hospital administrator, told the San Juan Health Care Board last week that Dr. William Bacon of Salt Lake City will be at the hospital and at the Blanding Clinic every three weeks. Mike LaGiglia, new lab manager at the hospital, told the board he plans to upgrade the lab with more creative ordering and better organization. LaGaglias plans include encouraging local doctors to send more of .their out patient lab work to the hospital. The board also heard that patient days at the hospital through February have increased as compared to 1989. Statistics show 375 acute days for 1990 compared to 346 for 1989. Surgical procedures for 1990 were 69 compared to 22 in 1989. The hospital had 552 swing bed days, compared to none in 1989. All swing beds at the hospital are full, with two clients on the waiting list. There are 10 people on the waiting list at the nursing home in Blanding. Other hospital statistics show that 28 percent of patients using the hospital in January and February were Native Americans. Financial figures for the first two months of 1990 show the hospital generating enough revenue to meet expenses without relying on tax anticipation notes based on the health care district taxing authority. Three openings on development board There are three openings on the San Juan County Economic Development Board to be filled from the Blanding and Bluff areas. At their regular monthly meeting, the board discussed several unofficial nominations for the positions and will approach the Blanding City Council and the County Board of Commissioners for approval of qualified applicants. The San Juan Committee of the Moab .Film Commission has been formed. The committee is now looking for people who wish to register as extras andor have services available for hire. Also, he informed the board that Nate McBride from the Small Business Development Center at the College of Eastern Utah in Price will be in San Juan County once each month to help with small business problems. We could use her given and surname when speaking of her; mostly, however, we referred to her as Sister Rogers. Always we addressed her with that title. We were required to, show such respect to other prople as well. Rather than offend others who did not believe as we did, they were addressed as Mr., Mrs. or Miss, whichever the case may be. It was a good requirement, for courtesy builds respect. I did respect Sister Rogers. I also developed a great love for her and her abilities. She was pleasant to be around; and always had a smile and a kind word for those in her company. Her ready smile, along with her pleasant countenance, gave indication of her great sense of humor. As I was gowing vup, I pictured Sister Rogers as one who always had things under control. It was in my youth that I learned to appreciate her special ability of expression. Her siblings, and children, too, had this wonderful talent and enjoyed using it. However long or short the talk or story, the audience would be mesmerized by its interesting presentation, relishing it to the end. It would be difficult, maybe impossible, to say how many people were befriended by this choice lady and her special husband. Difficult even to say how many young people lived in their home to be nourished by their good meals, love and concern. But they were many! I considered Sister Rogers a good friend of mine. During the past year or two, I had some infrequent, but most enjoyable visits with her.' On several occasions she told me what a great influence my mother had on her life. Its always pleasing to me to hear about my mother, especially so since I was at such a tender age when she died. Before my birth and her marriage, my friend worked for my mother. With a family as large as ours, there was always a great deal of work to do. At least twice each week all the wood floors were scrubbed vigorously. Washing and ironing had' to be done frequently. Always there were clothes to mend, three meals to cook every day, and a big batch of bread to be made at least every other day. A multitude of other chores were also on the list for each days accomplish- ments. Sister Rogers told me, I was tfamsD More than 57 percent of adult Americans have blood cholesterol levels above 200 milligrams per deciliter, a level at which the risk of coronary heart disease begins to rise sharply, says the American Heart Association. BLM adds $1,000 to reward money BLM Utah State Director James Parker and Cedar City District Manager Gordon Staker met with Garfield County Sheriff Robert Judd in Panguitch on March 29. They underscored the BLMs offer for additional assistance in efforts to capture and punish those responsible for the early March killing of 21 head of cattle in the Escalante River Canyon area. The BLM has offered the same support to the National Park Service who is coordinating the federal investigative effort. The BLM also is adding $1,000 to the fund of reward money being offered for April responsible for the act. BLM has been coordinating its efforts with the National Park Service and local law enforcement officials since the destruction was discovered. Parker said, This agency is outraged at the destruction of the cattle and, the vandalism that was evidenced in the burning of two line shacks. He went on to say, We are becoming increasingly concerned for the safety of the animals that legally graze the public lands. We will not rest easy until the people who committed this act have been apprehended. information leading to the arrest and conviction of those L!cn. & Kurt Russell fri&Sat r.:o:mcELLo 7&9pm Mon & Wed 11 times! At days end, when I was completely exhausted, she was still going strong. My friend continued, I thought that with all the training Id had from your mother, keeping up with my responsibilities after I married would be easy. It wasnt the easy thing I had anticipated, and my respect for ' your mothers abilities continued to grow. She was a wonderful woman. Sister Rogers was a wonderful woman, too. Im grateful for the privilege I had of knowing her. She lived a long life and a good one. At her death, I was glad to show my love and respect for her by attending her funeral. I was pleased to learn more about my friend during the service to honor her. Members of her family spoke, including her son and her both noted for their brother speaking ability. As the bishop stood to close the services, he commented, Brothers and sisters, weve witnessed a miracle here today. Riley and Milt both spoke and were through in less than an hour! I can almost hear my friends chuckle of appreciation at such a .comment and her gratitude at having her friends bid her farewell with a smile. ISSN 0894-327- 3 ASioc. .
