Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday by Heather Welker The 150 elk transplanted to the Blue Mountain Ridge area of San Juan County were captured from five locations in northern and central Utah, The transplant was the result of an agreement by the Div- ision of Wildlife Resources, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to supplement the existing elk population and cooperatively manage a huntable herd of elk. The decision to transplant elk to this area has been under appeal for several years. The transplant was initiated when a decision was made recently by the chief of the Forest Service to allow the transplant. Elk were captured using portable corral traps from several locations, including Cache, Tooele, Utah, and Emery counties. By obtaining a mixture of elk from numerous locations, biologists hope to increase genetic variability within the population. Genetic March 1, 1989 - Page 16 Once a group of elk are in the corral and begin to crowd around the large hay stack, one generally wanders away and locates the small, less visible hay stack. This small hay stack contains a trigger mech- anism which releases the gate, thus capturing the elk inside. This particular trapping technique allows biologists to capture up to 30 or 40 elk at a single time. Once the elk are captured, they are herded down the loading chute, ear tagged and loaded into horse trailers. At this point they are transported to the release location. Several elk are also equipped colwith lars. These collars emit signals which can be picked up by receivers. These signals enable biologists to monitor elk movements and to determine key use areas. All elk in the San Juan radio-transmitti- ng occupied the entire state of Weather Utah with the largest concentrations recorded in the Wasatch and Uinta mountains. The westward movement of settlers caused almost total loss of elk in Utah by the turn of the twentieth century. The traps used to capture the elk are made of steel panels covered with plywood which hook together to form a corral and loading chute. Hay is used to bait the elk through a gate into the corral. The especially cold and snowy weather the state has experienced recently has helped biologists to lure elk into the feed. A large pile of hay is distributed in plain view of the incoming elk. Another small stash is located in a less visible comer of the corral. DashMat.. dashboard the custom-mad- e covering that beautifies and protects from summer heat and winter cold.
