I was not very happy at 12 midnight, 2 a.m., 4 a.m., and 6 a.m. when I had to get down them, comer Gus in the yard, carry him upstairs while he protested vigorously, and then apply eye drops. I gave considerable thought to bashing his head in, I told the vet. Goodness! He did have a very bad eye but I hadnt expected it to be almost fatal, said Dr. f Herrick. But the whole worlds got problems, I guess. A young man who works on the uranium tailings project was in the store and his radio was talking to him. Youd better get back over here, the voice said. Go by the office and get my camera out of the top drawer of the file cabinet. Weve got two dozers and two scrapers buried. I did not go over to get details of the interred equipment. The tailings people are all very nice to me but at times discretion is the better part of valor. If I 1987 Census of Agriculture show that Utah had 14,066 farms, 5,938 of which had annual product sales of $10,000 or more. Land in farms totaled 9,989,073 acres, 86 percent of them in farms with $10,000 or more in sales, the Commerce Departments Census Bureau reported. The census showed that the states farmers and ranchers sold $618 million in agricultural products and that farms with $10,000 or more in sales averaged $100,040 per farm. Other findings: $130 million or 21 percent of total agricultural sales were for crops, while $488 million or 79 percent - ' - - r. s s - e, r r r r f. r . wandered around asking questions at that traumatic moment, I feared I might find myself joining two scrapers and two dozers. Last week there was a drilling rig on the slopes north of town on Jack Williams lease but George Petty and his aide, Mike Murphy, on duty at the site, tell me they are just cleaning stuff up, not going for a new well. However, it was very pleasant out there sitting on a log in the sun talking so I got a good general drilling update from George. He tells me Howell and Skeen have dropped their interest in the Williams lease area by the Hat Rock and Jerry Dickerson is trying to interest some money in further development there. Bill Sutherland put in a couple more holes for Williams in the sand pits in the vicinity but nothing exciting had developed. And Pettys rig out by Bell ' v V t 1 came from the sale of livestock, poultry, and other products. The agriculture census obtains information on all identified farm and ranch operations in the United States. The Census Bureau defines a farm as any place where $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold or normally would have been sold during the census year. Sampl- It was so nice sitting out there in the sun that Petty and I got into bygone oil days and I finally learned who drilled the wells up the canyon south of the old Goodridge townsite. It was Petty. One was pretty good and he named it Kim I for his daughter. Like all women, it got tempermental and stopped doing what George wanted it to do, that is produce oil. There are still traces of a handbuilt road on the hillside up that canyon and if you keep following the road until it expires and then climb a little farther you come out on a ridge above the river where Anasazis once camped to enjoy the view. Theres no pottery there but lots of flint chips. I got stuck in that canyon once and climbed up the side to find a layer of fossils not far from the top. Ive tried in ing is used to collect data for selected items and to account for nonresponding farm operations. Which reminds me that I was climbing out of the river canyon above John Sanders abandoned drill site a couple of weeks ago, thinking how interesting it is that typical river stones show up in such odd places like on top of a knoll a hundred feet above the present river bed.
