Eight Region 9 and Region 13 high school girls basketball teams participated. They are: Lehi, Morgan, Park City, Union, Wasatch, Moab, Grantsville, and San Juan. Great community effort and support went into hosting the tourney. Businesses and individuals donated money, food and prizes. CEU-SaJuan Center donated the programs. Cedar Mesa Pottery donated a n specially designed pottery piece to each team. They also made a small matching piece for each player, coach and manager which they sold at cost to the Blanding Chamber of Commerce. Donating up $100 were: the Elk Ridge Cafe, Cory Perkins, Blanding Mercantile,. Parley Redd Foodtown and UMETCO. Other businesses and individuals donated food, money or prizes for the tourney. They include K. P. Lyman, Gofer Foods, Pronto Deli, Shirleys Bakery, Kigalia Apartments, Motor Parts, San Juan Vision Clinic, Utah Division of Family Services, First Security Bank, San Juan Pharmacy, the Flower Shop, and Golden Circle Video. Also, Leonard Hurst Agency, San Juan Mortuary, Keith and DeAnn Ivins, Fabrics Plus, KUTA Radio, Patio Drive In, Stars, LaRay Alexander, and Craig Halls Legal Service. Also, Canyonlands Texaco, Truck Stop, State Rehabil- itation Office, Redds Plumbing, First Western National Bank, Bayles Exploration, Northern Electric, Scenic Aviation, and Steven Burtenshaw Insurance Agency. The donations were used to provide refreshments for the visiting teams in a hospitality room set up in the cafeteria for the three days of the tournament. Also, a hospitality room was provided for coaches and officials in the faculty room. In addition to the gifts provided for participants, other donated items were used as prizes for different contests held at The Morgan principal caught the spirit during the half-tim- e contest and offered to match a gift certificate from Janets Wedding Creations. Free videos were provided by - half-time- s. Golden Circle Video for the players to watch and local motel offered special rates for the teams. Several teams visited Edge of the Cedars Museum, Cedar Mesa Pottery Plant and other points of interest. Many appreciative comments were expressed by coaches, players and parents. The high school staff worked enthusiastically with the tour- nament committee. Cheerlead- ers spent time making signs for the gym and welcome signs for the city and school. KUTA radio and newspapers pretournament and coverage tournament support. Many faculty members and residents donated time at the ticket table and scoring and timing table. Don Palmer of San Juan Mortuary donated three full days serving as an announcer at all the games. The following people served on the hospitality committee: Ned and Marilyn Palmer, Sherry Ray, Donna Singer, Lurlene Gutke, Leila Jones and Marianne Pugh. However, many other parents of players and community members donated time to assist with the. tournament and play host to the team. It was a great community effort. One of the best region tournaments in memory. |
