Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday February 8, 1989 - Raiders claim two state mat titles by Leo Platero Whitehorse High boasts two state wrestling champs. They are Garold Burke and Fred Talker. Wins by the matmen went a long way to helping the Raiders secure fifth spot at the state meet held in Cedar City. Lady Broncos defeat Devils The Lady Broncos came out on top in three exciting contests last week in Moab. The JV game was the toughest with a final score of 49 to 47. The varsity team won their contest 42 to 49 after a slow start. The Freshmen walked away with a score of 23 to 13. In the varsity game, the Broncos struggled with turnovers and a slow start during the first quarter. They then caught fire and came on strong. Bench strength was a deciding factor and the strong rebounding efforts of Nedra Palmer gave the Broncos the edge they needed. Nedra also blocked six shots and served as a cohesive force for the team. Tracy Black was high scorer with 22 points and Doriene Barfuss came off the bench to score 15 points. Deniane Gutke and Tara Laws each added seven points. In a tough JV game, Stephanie Singer came through with 18 points including the final clincher. Cori Jones made 16 points and Allyn Adams made eight points. The freshman game was a fast and furious contest. Annette Adams brought the Broncos through with eleven points. She was aided by the teamwork and support of Carrie Bowers, Kelly Johnson and Linnae Lewis, who each contributed four points. Burke, a A,. Page 12 year wrestler; Stanford Sam, 112; and Calvert Lameman, 130. three-tim- e region champ, began his road to victory this year with a second place finish in region. On his d state title, way to the Burke beat Ben Clarkson of Kanab by a technical fall. In his semifinal match, he knocked off Wayne Brown of North Sevier. He sealed his state title when he finished off Blaine Chappell of Wayne County High.
