Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday January 27, 1988 - Page 16 Doris Valle The two most boring subjects in the whole world are ones personal aches and pains and the weather, yet I cant think of another single thing to write about. I cant lay claim to any really dramatic aches and pains but my disposition, never remarkable for placid sunniness, has so deteriorated in this disgusting weather that any moment I may take the fish out of the tank and kick them around the living room floor. Luther Risenhoover has been here 30 years and he says this is the worst winter hes seen in Mexican Hat. It was colder in 61, he said. But this is the most snow weve had since Ive been here. As I walk around the oil fields, I see not Beauty but snow behind me and in front of me and under my feet and over my head, or else weve had a teaser, a brief period of sunshine which makes my path a muddy morass. And as I whine and complain, I realize that my neighbors south of the river really have it tough. When the weather clears briefly, I watch pickups go by heavy laden with the little wood that can be scavenged without driving off the Mesas highway. Even if the people manage to keep warm and eat, theyre still in trouble because the livestock cant forage for feed. Hay is desperately needed. Today the bare gray branches of the trees in the trailer park were liberally dotted with small birds, huddling dark balls of feathers in the falling snow. Emery Hunt feeds them. Its mostly sparrows now, but weve seen five meadowlarks, Maude Hunt told me. Maude has had other guests besides the birds. Her brothers and their wives, Elmer and Evelyn Sage from Dillon, Montana and Vem and Rie Sage, Missouli, Montana, were here, also her daughter Leah Hill with her husband Bud (Lowell) Rasmussen of Monticello, came down to talk over old uranium boom days in Mexican Hat. He drove the first uranium ore truck that went across the scales at the Monticello mill. Later he had a fleet of trucks making the run from Industrial II near Oljato to MonticeUo and then to Mexican Hat after the mill opened here. Unfortunately Bud was one of those people who suffered ill effects from heavy exposure to radiation. He has cancer. I think it was working at the Monticello mill, not from hauling the ore, he said. The only really satisfactory way to get through these wintry days and nights is to take to ones bed with a good book. I assume everyone around here Although I was aware of the Navajo cultural story of a passage through three worlds before arriving at this one, I did not know that the Anasazis supposedly also did the one world after another bit. I got extremely irked with old Louis a few times because he kept having his hero remark, Oh, my goodness, if I werent so noble I would just forget all about this caper and go back I kept home to my condo . . mutand teeth gritting my tering, Listen, Buddy, either get on with it or go back to your condo but shut up about it yet. Still the book is fascinating and reminds me again of an old quote: There are more things in Heaven and Earth than man has dreamed of. has read Louis L Amours Haunted Mesa. If not, you can wander vicariously over the ways trod by the Anasazi during this time when you cant physically set foot on a trail lest you be lost in the snow until spring. L Amour is not one of my favorite writers although I hasten to add that I would happily carry his deposits to my bank any old day. But in this book, he presents an extremely intriguing concept. He has his hero and a few other characters passing through a time barrier into another world where the Anasazis supposedly retreated when they found life on this earth too complex. They did not necessarily live happily ever after when they went back. .. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS LeGrandee from Salt Lake. David Yellowman has been visiting Tom and Rose Yellow-maof Halchita.
