Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday March 11, 1987 - Page 8 Womens basketball tournament Climbing workshop The senior class at Monument Valley High School is sponsoring a Womens Basketball Tournament on March The tournament will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, and resume at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The tournament is a 12 team, double elimination tournament and Do you ever long to see the view from the top? Do you wish you could get just a little farther than the average hiker? The Canyonlands Field Institutes Up and Down the Walls: a climbing workshop, is designed for you. Learn to feel comfortable on sandstone, with the use of ropes and protection. No prior rock climbing experience is necessary. The course, that includes Friday evening lecture and two days of actual climbing practice, covers the use of ropes, types of knots, anchors, belays, principles of body movement, style and ethical considerations. The workshop fee includes use of equipment, instruction and two lunches. Participants provide their own helmet and harness. The books are borrowed from the State Library and will be available at the library in Monticello until April 13. Elementary school students planning science projects may find it helpful to check this as soon as resource material possible. Praise fellowship Praise Fellowship will begin at the San Juan County Library in Blanding on March 15 at 10 a.m. It is affiliated with the Foursquare Church and Pastor Musgrove will be ministering. Awards will include trophies for first, second, third, and All Tourney Team. The first place team will receive eight players medals, and there will be MVP for first place. The Bucks could score only seven points in the second period to South Summits 25. The third period was more of the same, with the Bucks scoring eight and South Summit scoring 23. The Bucks reserves tried to bring respectability back to the team and scored 14 to South Summits 20 in the last period. But it wasnt enough and the game ended with a MHS 42, South spread Summit 87. The only Buck to score in double figures was Layne Nielson with 10. The Bucks ended league play with a record of seven wins and 14 losses and a chance in the state tournament, where they were quickly eliminated. The Bucks looked good at times and perhaps next year will be the year for the MHS team. 18-1- 3 45-poi- The Bucks scored only six points and Enterprise extended their lead. The Bucks were never in the game after the first period and Enterprise won going away Enterprise ended up tourney champions, beating Beaver on Saturday night. The Bucks had only two players in double figures. Layne Nielson scored 13 and Alan Adams scored 10. Thursday the Bucks played South Summit and had a respectable first quarter with 67-3- 8. Visitation at Dead Horse Point State Park increased during the first two months of this year despite colder and wetter weather than was the case in January and February of 1986. The park reports that they have hosted 3,723 visitors to date this year, a five percent increase from the 3,537 visitors of the same period in 1986. High and low temperatures, in January and February, averaged seven degrees colder than for the same period of last year. There was .43 inches of precipitation with 2.5 inches of snow in the first two months of 1986. This year there has been 2.05 inches of moisture with 11.25 inches of snow. Park officials remind the public that Dead Horse Point is now taking campground reservations for the coming recrea- tion season. Reservations can be made by contacting the park by mail or in person.
