Show March 27, 1985 - Page 11 THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday where to go for when I have these problems help writing a column, I can just drive across the river to the Mexican Hat School to see the students who qualified for the District spelling bee. They are Janie Davies, sixth grade; Mary Pope, fifth grade; and Dominque Millman, fourth grade. Esther Begay, daughter of Lorena and Thomas Begay of Monument Valley, is home for a visit with parents and sister, Katherine Rock. Esther now lives in St. George, Utah. New babies at Monument Valley Hospital are a boy, Gregory, born Now I know to Priscilla Manygoats and Stefan Joe, son of Roselyn and Joe Begay. Excitement in Mexican Hat? Weekly Trivial Pursuits games still draw 50 percent of population. Which would be a lot of people if we werent talking about Mexican Hat. I stay home and read a murder mystery. How would I know that the plural of scampi is not skimpy but sc ampo. And that a long play 45 record has one groove starting at the beginning and going around and around to the end. And only the team of Cheri Valle, Gary Miller, Mary Beth Quinn, and Paula Horwitz would be able to win by knowing that a meerschaum is not a breed of dogs but a pipe as in "put it in your pipe and smoke it. The same social group also enjoyed a dance at Top of the When the drummer was Hat. late, Howard West, whohad never beat a drum before, did so until the pro arrived. That was the same night Ed Souhrada started dancing with a broom, then exchanged the broom for another guys girl. The pass the broom routine ended abruptly when a certain young lady named Mary EUen from Blanding thought Hugh Dickenson looked so cute sweeping around the floor that she took over Hugh, broom, and all. Our guests at History Day wouldnt believe how hard a lot of people worked policing the area around Lees Ranch the before the big event. Sunday Hammers and saws and shovels and rakes were wildly agitated in all directions. Even the very young generation assisted; they climbed up and down a nice pile of dirt until it was only a fragment of its former self. Champ of the dirt pile was the little Buckman girl who came on the scene in a snow white frilly angel child dress, fresh from church. Her father, Dennis, was at first unable to identify the soiled urchin who answered his call when he was ready to leave. Everybody worked. But me. To my shame. When Joyce to Martin called see if I could go hiking I relied on my old lady historian status to get me off the clean up crew. Up on Cedar Mesa, if you turn right at the first cattle guard on the Muley Point Road, you drive to the mesa edge above Johns Canyon and if you then get out and start climbing down, you find a wonderful meadow-lan- d, about halfway between and the mesa. There are Johns traces of Basketmaker Anasazi activity, and there are hundreds of deer tracks with an occassional paw print. Considerable vege- tation, including cedars, with one very vocal bird flitting about. After you get down there, how do you get out again? Dont ask me. I wait climbing down in a sitting position. When it was time to start up I stood there looking at those neat slick waterfall 'formations and said, No. No way. No. Pd be there if yet my hiking companion werent a big old bully.
