Show SETH SHUMWAY Seth Shumway was bom April in Pinedale, Arizona to and Mary Minnerly 16, 1893 Peter Johnson Shumway, He passed away April 10, 1984 at the San Juan County Hospital,' The sixth of twelve children, he lived on a farm in Fruitland, New Mexico for eight years. The next nine years were spent in Jewett, New Mexico before the family moved to Fiddlers Green, about 15 miles outside of Blanding, A : short time later the family moved to Blanding, living in a home af Shirttail Comer, Seth started trapping just a year before he was called into the Army. He was sent overseas, pending most of the time in France and Germany, During his military tour he was slightly wounded. Upon his return home he continued trapping and did so for the government for about 15 years. His life was spent doing the things he loved most prospecting and ranching. He was still trapping and checking on his cows until just a few weeks before his death. Funeral services were held on April 13, 1984 at the LDS Stake Center and interment was at Blanding City Cemetery. He passed away at his home in Blanding, Utah on April 15, 1984, of a heart attack. Phil worked with his father and uncle in their mortuary until the family moved to Phoenix in the late 1930s where he worked for a grocery chain. He later moved to a small mining community where he worked in a grocery store with a small restaurant connected to it. It was here that he became interested in cooking andhe later worked in several restaurants, some of which he owned, and perfected his art of fine restaurant and hotel cooking. He married Zelma Black in 1942 and they moved to Blanding in 1954. They operated the Old Elk Ridge Restaurant for a year and then moved to MonticeUo and operated the Avalon Restaurant and the Texburger. They moved back to Blanding in 1957 and again Elk Ridge the operated Restaurant. He also helped found the Lake Powell Ferry Service, which evolved into the Halls Crossing resort, and he managed the marina there in its early years, in 1968, Phil and a partner bought the Silver Saddle Restuarant, renamed it the Elk Ridge Restaurant (the other one had burned) and Phil operated it from then until his death. He realized a long time when he, and his ambition partners, established a mortuary in Blanding. He had promised Zelma he would some day do this when her brother died in 1951 and they encountered hardships and problems due to the great distance to a mortuary. The entire county benefits from the mortuary and Phil was very pleased with this accomplishHe was also involved ment. with other service oriented businesses including convenience stores, car washes and laundromats. Phil loved to hunt and spend time in the hills with friends He was active and relatives. in the Republican Party at both the county and state level. He taught his family a love of country, of freedom, and of individual responsibility. Funeral services were held at the Blanding Stake Center on April 19, 1984. interment was in the Blanding City Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Zelma; sons Phil, Kim and Mike; a sister, Betty Gordon; and brothers Tanny, Bill and Huck , Acton. Our family thanks the many and friends relatives who traveled to the funeral services, spent time comforting us, prepared meals, sent beautiful floral arrangements, andbrought words of comfort (hiring this time of our sorrow.
