MEATS a SMALL COMPUTERS (Dont Buy One) By Francis M. Lyman, CPA LYMAN & THOMPSON, CPAs very large percentage of small business buy out to be unsatisfactory and expensive. installations turn First-tim- e buyers of computers invariably lack knowledge as to their needs in terms of accounting and clerical functions; they lack knowledge of the capacities of various machinery and fail to estimate the overall cost of the software and the time and expense to install the system. Most of us are qualified to buy a vehicle for our business because we have driven them, we understand our needs, and we are acquainted with the various suppliers available. Very few of us would feel qualified to buy a race horse without the input of an unbaised and very knowledgeable individual. If your computer installation turns out to be unsatisfactory and you choose to seU it, in almost aU cases youU find out that the resale value is substantially less than your initial cost. There isno substitute fortalkingto someone who has been down the rocky road. Find three or four installations of a computer you're interested in and which has been installed in businesses similar to yours. You'll find the owners of these machines most willing to discuss their installations with you. Do you know, for example, the style of CRT and the quantity you need? Do you know whether you want floppy or hard disc application? Do you know if you need data transmission and the rate necessary? Do you know the number of bytes your processor needs? Do you know what speed rate you want on your printer? You must take time to investigate and gain the appropriate knowledge before you set out to buy this expensive equipment. If you don't feel qualified to assist someone else in buying a computer, don't try to assist yourself, don't warmer Quiet operation Kistin Perkins. Door prizes at Albert R.
