This article is dated August Their complaint with 3, 1982. I the system has been that the return is minimal and that the system does not give a dollar for dollar return on money invested. I have also talked with county employees nearing retirement age who complain that the State Retirement does not offer a com- petitive return on their money. I wonder then why it is the county andor hospital employees are thisparticu-la- r seeking to re-en- ter system when around us, in both the county and state, others are trying to invest their retirement benefits with aprivate investment company. It would seem prudent for the, commissioners andor hospital board to inquire further in this matter before expending legal fees in trying to the State Retirement System. Sincerely, s John K. Black re-en- ter Dear Editor, Monticello and Blanding residents, and especially to all people subscribing to cable TV: We want to let you all know that we received a phone call September 23 from the owners of Blue Mountain Cable TV informing us that we will no longer be employed with this company after September 30, 1982. They feel that they can gain more subscribers by managing the operation themselves. We would like to let everyone know how much we aprpeciate all the help and cooperation you have given us, which has made our management of this company as successful as it has been. We both have sincerely enjoyed serving all of you this past year. You have helped to make our jobs here a pleasurable experience. We plan to stay here and continue to- make our home in Monticello if at all possible. We like it here and hope to get to know a lot of you fine people - Page 2 in December of 1935. The librarian was Leah Perkins Conn, a young widow with a small daughter Herma Lea. Leah later became the wife of Leonard BartelL She was knowledgeable and willing to help. She knew a great deal of San Juan County and became one of my best friends. The library was in the northwest comer of the courthouse. As has been stated, at that time it was a larger room and I am sure none of the rooms were carpeted. One book I especially enjoyed was called The Sacred Wen about archeaology finds in Old Mexico, where Yucatan, young, beautiful, virgin Mayan girls were sacrificed to the Gods. I referred this book to my family and dreamed that some distant day I would go there. In 1974 my daughter Barbara ar- ranged a most delightful tour to Mexico which included Chichen Itza where the Sacred Well is located. g Ours is a family. I feel very kindly toward libraries and librarians. They are special people. We are fortunate to have such good service in San Juan. Sincerely, s Mabel R. Wright book-lovin- Dear Editors: We received a letter from Maria Maes asking that we help her and her youth group to find penpals in Utah. We are sending you a copy of her letter and wondered if you would be so kind as publish it in the San Juan Record. Perhaps some will to their request. Thank you. Yours truly, Velda J, Nielson Blanding City Office My name is Maria Maes and I am a Belgian girl, living in Boom. I am part of a group of young people, all between 14 and 26 years old, who would love to correspond with Americans in all to re-so- nd ages. We are all especially interested in making friends in Utah but not knowing how to find penpals over there we decided to write Town-Hal- ls and ask for help. My house is just a driveway apart from my neighbors house and when they work in their driveway, I can hear when they drop a tool or break a bottle. They park their coke bottles by the door and a broken one is not uncommon. Being used to' it, I was not startled when I was wakened by a noise in their driveway. It happened several nights in a row and suddently I realized that they were not home but had gone on a fishing trip. To say the least my curiosity was, growing. Then I remembered that their son, 17, had not gone with them and that his habit was not to come home early and never quietly. I calmed myself and recalled all the scary goose bumps that had insisted on breaking out all over me when I would hear the noises. However, those noises persisted and sounded for all the world like they were in my house. But of course that was stupid. My house was locked and there was no possibility that anyone could get in without breaking a window. A crash similar to breaking glass my thoughts and interrupted brought me swiftly out of bed with a new contingent of goose bumps and something very like fear began galavanting through my mind. I scrambled to the window to look in my neighbors driveway. However, there was only me and even while the noise was still going on, I found the courage to open the door just a crack and flip the light on. I didnt waste any time getting it shut again either. Peering again through the grill, I saw, probably half starved and likely frightened as much or more than I, a large bird setting on the washer, blinking at the light. He had broken bottles and vases and lamp shades and scatteredpapers and other things around the room. It was a terrible mess. He had been there for at least four days. In spite of the mess I laughed out loud and startled the poor bird and he hid on top of the furnace. I opened wide the front door and gently shooed the bird that way. He fiUed my hope and flew toward the light and freedom. As he flew, I saw a little red and I think he was a woodpecker. How the sam hiU he got in, I dont know, but at last my burglar was gone. I cleaned up the mess and finally brought in the milk. I had learned that things are not always what they seem. tmi- - if k is Saturday 5p.m. ilk IS I should open the door, the thing, whatever it was, would rush out. Morning seemed to hold peace and quiet for my little household world. My house is a split level and the entity gives a stair going down and one going up. I got as far as the landing on my way to bring in the milk, when from down stairs, with no mistake, there was a noise in my basement. To say I stopped dead still is an understatement more like dead! I felt the hair taking on a permanent along the back of my neck. My knees turned to rubber and my face felt very cold. Should I call the police or should I investigate? I began to talk earnestly to myself. Now think a minute, nobody can get in here and if they did, they wouldnt be making all that noise. Neither would they stay for two or three days. Maybe its just a rat. A rat! My gosh, weve never had one in the house. The sound came again and I took myself gingerly and frightfully down those stairs.
