Mini - conference May 6 in Blanding library on aging, sponsored by the Utah State Division of Aging and the San Juan County Aging office, is scheduled for Thursday, May 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the San Juan County Library in Blanding. Purpose of the conference is to obtain information from senior citizens about the problems of the aged in Utah. The recommendations from the conference will be compiled and referred to the A mini-confere- nce governor's office for his review and response at the 1982 Governors Conference on September 15, in Salt Lake City. Louise Lintz, director of the State Division of Aging, will attend the conference. Eight state officials will also attend. There is no fee or charge for the conference. A buffet lunch will be provided for a small suggested donation. Residents .of San Juan County will have a chance to participate in the major research project either as volunteer researchers or as study participents. Colleen Bronson of MonticeUo has been named unit chairman for San Juan North and Ruth Palmer has been named unit chairman for San Juan South. The women will supervise and coordinate the start-u- p of the study and manage it over a six-ye- ar period. be will responsible for They organizing and directing the volunteer recruitment of volunteer researchers, who, in turn, will enroll local residents in the study. Seventy residents are needed in San Juan North and 230 residents are needed in San Juan These participants will South. be asked to complete a detailed, confidential questionnaire about and lifestyle their health practices. From information provided by these residents and study participants all over the country, scientists will try to find factors related to cancer that may be useful in Instituting measures everyone can take to prevent cancer. Once the initial questionnaires are completed, the research volunteers will keep track of the with visits once participants every other year for the next six years. The status and whereabouts of the volunteers will be reported to the American Cancer Study headquarters. In addition, when study participants die, health statisticians will be able to determine how their lifestyles affected tjieir health by referring to information' in the questionnaire. Volunteer researchers are needed now so they can be trained before fall. Anyone interested in helping with this important study is encouraged to call.
