San Juan County has begun to manage a possible boom economy energy-relat- ed industries with a tax stability trust fund, improved county road policies and two upcoming water storage projects. Another prime consideration and concrete walls and 90 minutes Juan. If either of two test sites one Gibson Dome north of Monti-cel- lo and one on Elk Ridge west of Blanding are selected, San Juan could expect growth and stability in its fluctuating econ- at omy. DOE estimates that the storage facility would provide over 1,600 construction jobs for five years. It projects the need for 1,200 operational employees and 1,800. secondary service workers. A disposal site would mean approximately 5,000 new residents in San Juan. San Juan members of Governor Mathesons nuclear waste task force are State Representative C. Hardy Redd, Edward Boyle, former county commissioner and the president of Minerals West, Stephen Nielson. The committee was formed to make recommendations to the governor on the feasibility of nuclear waste storage in Utah. These three men, the county commission and the Blanding city council all feel that if the geology and technology for the waste terminal can be proved safe, such a facility would benefit San Juan. However, San Juan will have to fight if the nuclear waste issue is to be decided on its merits. opposition to the terminal has made attempts to prejudice the final decision beOut-of-cou- nty fore all facts are in. A vocal leader opposing the nuclear waste site in Utah is State Senator Francis Farley, also a member of the. goverthe nor's task force. It has been reported that at the July meeting of the task force, Senator Farley gave personal interviews to television crews in the hallway near the meeting room, Farley , made statements on behalf of the task force which did not accurately represent the views of San Juan leaders. The interview was of such concern to task force members from San Juan and Grand County that a call was made to the television station that filmed the interview. Complaints of misrepresentation were registered with the station. The Farley interview was not repeated on the late news. I do not think people should make up their minds in advance of the facts," says Rep. Redd. "I think one should keep an open mind. I believe Senator Farley is doing all she' can to prevent a storage site in Utah." When meeting with the San Juan county commission, Bob .. C ommissioner Calvin Black has commented on the economic aspect of the nuclear waste issue. If we do not have continued nuclear power, we will see mining and milling of uranium continue to go down. To avoid an economic crash, we need to view the location of the storage site here providing it is safe geologically and technically as a way to promote our economy. The growth we would have would be no greater than the growth we have had in the past 10 years. A fhr worse impact than that created by growth would be no growth or a decrease in population." Because of San Juans dependence on uranium income, it is in our interest to make our position known," said Black.
