By Utah Derris Jones Division of Wildlife Resources Blanding striped bass were introduced into Lake Powell. Since 1974, a little over 700,000 fingerling stripers have been stocked into the lake. Approximately 80 per cent of these striped bass were stocked intoWahweap Bay with the rest going into Bullfrog Bay. The striped bass eggs were obtained from California, and the striped bass were raised in rearing ponds at a Utah Division of Wildlife Resource installation near Glen Canyon City, Utah. The striped bass is a silvery, spiny - rayed fish with dark horizontal several streaks along the sides. They live in large moving schools. Lake Powell, the thread-fi- n shad is the most popular food item on the stripers menu. During the summer months, striped bass also feed on crayfish. To spawn successfully, striped bass need large rivers with sufficient current to keep the semi-buoya- nt eggs in suspension until they hatch. Because it takes 36 to 75 hours for the eggs to hatch, In a considerable stretch of flowing water is needed. There has been some evidence of natural spawning occurring on Representatives of San Juan School District, a school community group and others take part in groundbreaking for the new high school in Monument Valley. 4 th of July Dinner!! There have been unverified reports of striped bass up to 17 being caught. Division biologist Mike Ottenbach-e- r believes the striped bass could be up to about 26 pounds by this summer. Until last year, the striped bass was not showing up in substantial numbers in the fishermans creel; but, last year, it made up 30 per cent of the fish creeled at Wahweap. The best fishing for striped bass is during the spring spawning run or in mid - summer when the striped bass are feeding on the surface. On calm days, striped bass feeding on the surface can be located by watching for disturbance of the water surface. It is important to move in quickly to get a lure pounds into the school before it moves on. The most ef- fective lures are those that imitate a small fish, such as a silver spoon or a jig. Trolling with deep running lures, including spoons, plugs and leadheaded jigs, is an effective method for taking striped bass when they are not feeding on the furface. white-feather- ed striped bass fishing at Lake Powell looks to have a promising future.
