Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD, Thursday, July 3; 1980 - Page 2 a I jo and began to apwhat it was all about preciate and to be proud of her flag Casse Gray, AUt was the Fourth of July, 1910, and I was seven years old in that almost - forgotten little town of Grayson, in San Juan County. Papa had told me what the Fourth was all about and why we have a flag and about dear sweet Betsy Ross who made the first one. He explained why the big noise of and fireworks, and I guns shivered with excitement, this was THE DAY! for I marshaled my brother to lead part of my imaginery army and supplied all my men with prancing horses of the best sticks five-year-- old I could find and used smaller ones for our guns as we chased the British through the weeds and sagebrush of our lot. In those days it was the custom to have a stirring program early in the morning, and Pa was almost always The Orator of the Day, to deliver some soul - jerking story of the Revolution to the 24 families who had accumulated in our little town since 1905. in the morning, Mama made us leave all those dead men right there in the weeds where we had slain them, promising that we might bury them after the program., We were scrubbed and dressed in the very best thing we had and taken to join the rest of the town, for nobody stayed home on these wonderful festive occasions. We heard Pas thrilling oration as he told about some very wonderful men who gave their lives for their country. There was some singing and Pa played the violin and after a long and solemn prayer, the program was over and we were free to run some races and watch a tug - of - war and some other games that were not half so thrilling to me as the war Platte and I were having before the program started. It is too darn bad that Mr. Washington didnt have ice cream to bribe the EngAt 9 lish with. If he had had some of Mamas homemade ice cream to offer them, they would have been happy to go and Im sure even home their old King would have called them home if they could have given him a taste of That little town that gave kind of a celebration is no more and I often wonder how the day appeals to people today. I asked some to tell me about the very first F ourth of July they could remember and the answers were interesting to say the least. any said it America and the love we for it is as valid today as it ever was, and deserves the very best stick horses and the very best homemade ice cream to help cultivate a handsome pride in our land! , dard.
