Show Elk Athena Firing Early Friday Archery Season Set For the first time in Utah, there will be a special archery season for bull elk the season will run from August 28 to September 12, 1971, concurrently with the archery deer season. The archery season for elk is part of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources program to provide increased recreational opportunities for the sportsman. It should be pointed out that the main purpose of this type of hunt is for recreation, and that the percent of hunter success will be low. This is indicated by comparing figures from the deer hunts; in 1970 the hunter success during the regular deer season was 55. 5 percent while the hunter success during the archery hunt was 17. 9 percent; and, the hunter success during elk season was 20 percent. So, you can see that the expected success for an archery elk hunt in all probability will be low. However, the lucky hunter will have a trophy well worth the effort. The areas open to archery hunting will be all open bull areas in the State: Ashley-Dagge- tt; Ashley-VernAshley Whiterocks; Bear River-Ho- le in the Rock; Cache; Cedar Mountain; Fishlake, Coslin-ThrComers; LaSal Mountain; Manti Mountain; Mount Dutton; Nebo; Ogden River; Salt Lake. Regular elk season will open on October 2 to October 12, 1971, with some units remaining open until October 17. In addition to the open bull permits, there will be eight restricted permit areas; for areas and number of permits, obtain a proclamation from license agents or Division of Wildlife Resources offices or officers. Open bull area permits will be sold at the Main Office in Salt Lake and the five regional offices; from August inclusive. The archery permits will be sold from August 23 to August 27. Mail applications will not be accepted for open bull elk standard permits or the archery bull elk permits. Applications must be accompanied by individual's big game license. Applications for elk permits on restricted areas must be made by mail to the main office of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, 1596 West North Temple, Salt Lake City Utah 84116. Applications will be accepted between August 18 and 27, 197L Application forms are available from license agents or conservation officers. Only those people who did not have an elk permit in 1970 are eligible to apply for an elk permit in 197L Anyone who purchases a 1971 archery bull elk permit cannot apply for or receive any other elk v. Air Force officials today announced the scheduled launch of an Athena missile Friday morning from the White Sands Missile Range Launch Complex near Green River, Utah. The multi-stagresearch vehicle will be programmed to impact on the national range in south central New Mexico. Army personnel will monitor the firing and provide safety and support. The firing is scheduled for completion by 6 a. m. Friday, At the same time, Army officials said the safety area west of U.S, Highway 160-1between LaSal Junction and Monticello would be evacuated for the mission.
