Show Miss Kartchner named Queen and second place winners in the "See UtahFint" essay contest sponsored by The Utah Travel Council will visit Canyonlands and San Juan County, the Council announced last week. The first place winner, Mrs. William Morrison, a Kays-vil- le housewife has chosen a trip sponsored by the San Juan Tourist and Publicity Council which will consist of a visit at the San Juan Motel at Mexican Hat and Monument Valley Tour conducted by Jim and Emery Hunt. From there she will go to the Hall's Crossing Marina for a boat trip and an overnight visit. Canyonlands Aviation will give her a trip over the Canyonlands and the Kent Frost Canyonlands Tours will take her into the less accessible country. She will visit the Blue Mountain Ranch for one night on the trip. The second place w inner, Mrs. C. F. Hall of Morgan, will get a trip with Kent Frost Canyonlands Tours leaving from Moab. Neither of the contestants have been in this country before. Both Statuesque Allyn Kartchner has been chosen to reign as queen of Blanding's Frontier Days Celebration. First attendant will be Susan Mosely and second attendant will be Pamela Alexander. The three lovely misses were selected in competition held last Friday evening, in the San Juan High School Auditor- ium, where nine lovely contestants vied for honors. Departing from the traditional beauty contest agenda of bath- ing suits, evening gowns, and talent, the girls first appeared on stage delivering a three minute speech expressing their thoughts on "What is Patriotism?" Several of the girls called on quotations from famous personnages to reinforce their own sentiments, but it was evident that much thought and organization went into the preparation of their speeches. The contestants displayed a variety of talent in presenting an original narrative with guitar accompaniment, vocal selections, dances, dramatic and humorous readings, and piano solos for the pleasure of the audience and the discernment of the judges. Pam Alexander and Sue Mosely, pianists, both chose selections from the field of popular music to display their virtuosity on the ivory. Allyn Kartchner, dressed in a ed ruffles, Lorraine Shurmvay, mariachis in hand, presented a colorful Spanish type dance. Two readings, one dramatic and one humorous, were rendered by Kathleen Carroll and Pamela Mikesell, respectively. Kathleen's monologue, "Yellow Wallpaper, " portrayed the dementia of a young bride and was forceful in its impact. In stark contrast was Pamela's characterization of a young boy recounting his adventure with an imaginary bear. Sharlene Sterling accompanied herself on the guitar while reciting an original narrative personifying the life of a guitar from its inception to its shelving when its young male owner is killed. In the third portion of the competition the girls appeared onstage with escorts and then modeled their formal gowns. Sue Mosely was unique in a white gown fashioned after her grandmother's wedding gown. fin-- t $ Richard A.
