Gov. .. Officials for two weeks now have been warning that due to drought conditions, high winds and the presence of huge amounts of combustible cheat grass, the danger of spreading fire is extreme. This was graphically demonstrated last week with a runaway fire in Blanding that consumed a sawmill and caused some $75,000 in damage. The cheat grass was so explosive that fire fighters never had a chance to prevent the damage. In Monticello Tuesday a similar fire started in the grass south of the school and if any buildings had been close chances of saving them would have been slight because of the manner and speed in which the fire spreads. Issuance of fire permits by the sheriffs office has stopped but still the danger exists of a bad fire from other than a fire set for a purpose. Cigarettes, matches and campfires could also cause damage and for this reason everyone is urged to be extremely cautious while in any area where large amounts of cheat grass or other combustible material is present.
