Faced with lack of sufficient funds to adequately meet the needs of Monticello during this recent period of growth and expansion, Mayor Edway Redd,, members of the city council and City Manager Byron Oberg have under advisement a proposed combination retail sales tax and business license tax. This week the following statement was issued which clearly states the citys problems and outlines the proposed solution. Since 1953 the City of Monticello has experienced economic growth that has doubled the population. This phenomenal growth has caused the city to exert itself to the utmost financially to keep up with the great expansion in all functions of city government necessary to meet the needs of Levy street signs and numthan in 1929. The Water Problem The City of Monticello water works was originally installed in 1914 by the Blue Mountain Irrigation Company. It consisted of a 27,500 gallon reinforced concrete reservoir and a wood stave pipe distribution system of 6 and 4 inch. While not wholly adequate, the system did serve until 1942 when the requirements of the Atomic Energy Commission for water, for both the mill and housing for personnel, required additional water and the replacement of the wood stave pipe system. In 1942 the City in with the Defense Plant Corporation made improvements in the source and corporate distribution system. Because of the scarcity of materials due to national defense, it was necessary to use over 15,550 lineal feet of 3 Vi inch boiler tubing as water mains..
