Show 4 The Morgan County News Dougs MEANWHILE, THE SQUEEZEON LOCAL GOVERNMENT TIGHTENS. Den Publisher of The Morgan County News Friday, August 13, 2004 dougjmorgannews.ua ; 2 Governor want-- and a reporter to-b- es On the night of the election in June when we found out that John Huntsman Jr. and Scott Matheson Jr. would be the contenders for the Governor of Utah, 1, as a publisher of this paper, emailed both candidates, as well as their P.R, people and said that if they were willing to come to Morgan to debate, I would set it up. I also told them if they were to come to Morgan County, at any time of any day, I would love to meet with them for a few minutes and discuss Morgan County and the issues we face. Last Thursday morning, I after the paper was put away for the week, I met with Scott Mathcsen Jr, at Larrys Spring Chicken Inn. I also met with Karen Hale, who is Matheson Jrs running mate, and a very likable person. 1 met with them at 9:00 a.m, and they stayed and talked until f 11:30! We talked about water Issues, land issues, education issues, power issues and many; more. 1 have always loved the way that politicians try to sidestep issues. I saw none of this with Matheson Jr., or Mrs, Hale, I am a person that votes for people that can answer my ques4 tions, and questions that effect the people in my county, I havent voted for a democ4 rat for Governor in the last 20 years, but I may just do so this time. He took the time to talk to me, as a reporter and publisher! about our county and our state! As a reporter 1 have been taught to find both sides of an issue. The issue is: if a candidate is' willing to spend 2 12 hours talking to me, a small town newspaper man, I feel he cares about our county - he must, or he wouldnt have stopped. Letters to the Editor The parade was great, but... www.barry5cartoons.com want to say Thank You to all the people who made this parade to open the County Fair one of the best Morgan has probably ever had and makes me proud of our community. I would also like to comment on something else at the parade that was not a proud moment for our community. The Morgan High School football team came out from practicing just before the parade and stood together at the corner of the school and on the bridge. In a small town like Morgan, football is very important and the town - especially the small children- look up to the players. As such popular figures in the town they had a lot of candy thrown to them during the procession. During the parade the players would unwrap some of the candy and eat it, only to throw the wrappers on the ground. After the team left, the ground around where they had stood was littered with wrappers (the small children were watching to see if they would leave any candy - which they quickly scooped up when the team left). These small children were watching these players which they like to emulate. How sad it is that the local heroes set such a poor example.
