Show 8A Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday December 28, 2004 AAA Reports Lower Prices for the Holidays decrease past are If falling gasoline prices price dropped 13 cents to $1.84. A year ago the national average price was $1.47. Holiday shoppers can thank the mild winter weather the nation has enjoyed as a major reason for the decrease in prices, said Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokeswoman. The warm weather allowed oil inventories to recover from the effects of Hurricane Ivan. All of the Utah cities surveyed by AAA experienced decreases any indication, motorists must have been very nice. The latest report from AAA Utah finds gasoline prices have dropped significantly as the holidays approach. AAA Utah tracks prices as a service to consumers. This month the average price in Utah for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $1.92, a 10 cent drop from AAAs last survey on November 16. A year ago, Utah motorists paid an average of This three point buck was shot at the Huntington game farm. t') Rewards Offered in Poaching Incidents in Emery and Carbon counties i The Utah Division of "Wildlife Resources (DWR) is posting rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the following wild-- , life crimes: 1 ' Ratal shooting and waste of two calf elk near Huntingtons South Flat Road on or about Dec. 4 a and Wildlife), the Utah Farm Bureau, land managing agencies, and Utahs Regional Adv- chance to hunt Utahs limited entry units after the Utah Wildlife Board approved changes that should increase the number of mature bull elk in the state. The proclamation should be available by late December. Board members also approved two deer hunting recommendations brought to them by the Southern and Southeastern citizen regional advisory councils. y The general rifle buck deer hunt will continue in the Southeastern Region. In the Southern Region, the general rifle buck deer hunt has been reduced from nine to five days across the region. The 2005 general rifle buck deer hunt in the two regions will run Oct. Elk hunting changes The elk hunting changes the board approved were recommended by the Utah Elk Management Plan Advisory Comcommitmittee. The tee includes representatives from and conservation sportsmans groups (including the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Sportsmen for Fish isory Councils and Wildlife Board. Jim Karpowitz, big game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, was the committees facilitator. The committee worked hard to find ways to allow more people to hunt bull elk on limited entry units without negatively affectingthe bull elk population we have, Karpowitz said. The committee came up with some great recommendations, and the Division of Wildlife Resources supported those recommendations. The board approved the fol- five-da- d Hawk southwest of Orangeville Shooting of a in late October. The hawk is presently in rehabilitation, but can never be returned to the wild. Moab motorists saw prices drop the most; 12 cents, for a current average price of $1.96 a gallon for regular unleaded Ogdens motorists experienced an early holiday gift with average prices dropping 11 cents to $1.88 per gallon. The average price in Provo is $1.90, 10 cents lower than Novembers average. The price in Salt Lake City dropped nine cents to $1.86. The average price in St. George is $2.01, an self-serv- e. from last eight cent month. Logans price dropped a nickel to $1.99 per gallon. Vernals motorists experienced the smallest decrease, two cents, for a current average price of $2.00 per gallon. The drop in barrel price to the low $40 mark was unexpected by oil traders, said Fairclough. At the recent OPEC meeting in Cairo, the ministers voted to decrease production by a million barrels a day in an effort to offset falling prices. Elk hunting changes should increase the number of mature bulls in Utah More elk hunters will have : The national average $1.58. 22-2- lowing committee recommendations. These changes will go into effect for Utahs 2005 seasons: 6. The hunter cap on spike bull units has been reduced from 19,000 to 11,000 permits and the general season on spike units has been shortened from 13 to nine days. This will reduce the take of spike bulls and allow more of them to grow into mature animals, Karpowitz said. Almost 13,000 hunters season hunt will run Nov. 2005. To accommodate the late participated in the spike bull hunt in 2004. Bull elk on limited entry units are managed under three age class objectives. The board voted to keep the three to four year age class and approved the committees recommendations to change the middle and highest categories. Units managed 12-- 18, season hunt, the general muzzleloader elk season will start and end three days earlier than it did this year. Thirty percent of the limited entry rifle permits for 2005 will be used for the late season hunt. Fewer elk should be taken because this hunt will be held outside of the rut, he said. The benefit to hunters is the chance to hunt elk when virtually no one else is afield. The longterm benefit should be more elk and more limited entry permits for hunters in the future. The board also approved a premium limited entry elk opportunity. Premium limited entry elk permits will cost more (for example, a resident limited entry permit will cost $280 compared to $508 for a resident premium limited entry permit), but those who draw them will be allowed to hunt all three seasons on the unit they draw a permit for. Five percent of the limited entry bull elk rifle permits available for 2005 will be premium limited entry permits. under the middle category (which had been five to six years) will be managed for four to five year-ol- d bulls, while units managed under the highest category (which had been seven to eight years) will be managed for five to six year-ol- d bulls. Lowering these age categories will still allow hunters a chance for a very nice bull but because well be managing for a slightly younger animal, we can offer more permits, Karpowitz said. There are .plenty of bulls on these units, so offering more permits should not affect bull numbers or the quality of the animals much. A late season rifle elk hunting opportunity will be available away from the rut.
