Show 8A Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday August 31, 2004 Spartans make By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer The Emery Spartans traveled to Cedar City and came home frustrated with their second loss of the young football season. Despite making team improvements, the Spartans lost 0 to the Canyon View Falcons last Friday night. Talkingwith assistant coach Matt Justice, he said, We are a little frustrated right now because we are a better team than our record would indicate. The Spartans made improvements on the field as they decreased their turnovers and increased their passing attack. Emery had just two turnovers in the game, a fumble and an interception. Quarterback Joey Bernard also connected on eight of his first 11 passing attempts for 130 yards and a touchdown to Trevor Thompson. The Spartans did not have an answer though for Canyon Views ace running back Weston Lambeth. Lambeth ran the ball 10 times for 203 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on the Falcons first play in the game, a run up the middle. He also scored on the Falcons first play of the second half, another run up the middle but this time for 69 yards. The Spartans moved sophomore Davey Justice to tailback to take advantage of his running ability. Justice ran the ball 11 times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Spencer Cook ran the ball 19 times for 87 yards and a touchdown and Bernard ran the ball 12 times for 56 yards. run Justices Id w'as a up the middle and Cooks td was 27-2- 63-ya- rd 25-ya- rd a 2- - yard run. Thompsons touchdown was 69- - yard completion. The Spartans finished the game with 202 yards on the ground and 142 yards through the air for a total of 344 yards. The Spartans had opportunities to win this game as they marched down the field late in the game but turned the ball over on downs. Canyon View fumbled on their next possession and the Spartans could not pick up a first down.
