Carbon High wrestlers beat the first, second and third place 5A team last season, and expect much tougher competition from the local region 8 teams Lehi, North Sanpete, Delta and Emery. Smith said he would like to have 60 wrestlers on Carbon's team, a number which is becoming more realistic with the increase in youth wrestlers who start at the age of six. In his sixth year as Carbon's wrestling coach. Smith has developed a program that focuses on good techniques rather than trying to build strength. A kid who has good technique beats the real strong kid every time, he asserted. Smith said he thinks wrestling is a misunderstood sport and that breaking down those misconceptions could increase participation. A lot of people view it as a fight, but it's not; its a competition, he pointed out. Wrestling is a very technical sport. I believe it is the most technical sport out there. Several returning Carbon wrestlers had top finishes at state last year, including Trent Greenhall and Zack Burdick with third place finishes and Dallen McFarlane, who came in fifth. Dustin Howa and Brett Riche also qualified for last year's tournament. have a good, solid nucleaus with those kids, Smith commented. The team is young this year and will only lose a few seniors. A strong Carbon team can be expected for several years to come.
