Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale Utah Tj sda July 1 2003 7A C OMMENTARY The Yankee Doodle Bandy By CINDY CHAMPNELLA On Saturday, had an end of Jadyns school the year program The teacher announced brightly at its beginning, Since our holiday program celebrated diversity, we thought that w e w ould hav e a program to celebrate the ONE thing that we all hav e in common vv e are ALL Americans' I swallowed hard Jaclyn, reof the is citizen a cently adopted, Peoples Republic of China, she has' not yet been granted citizenship here Then the children trooped out To my amazement, I watched Jaclyn, hand soberly over her heart, recite the pledge1 of allegiance with all theotherchildien Ivvatched her sing, My country 'Tis of Thee I watched her recite all fifty States. My fav orite is the one she calls New Hampster And then it was her turn for the spotlight They brought her forw aid m a quartet to sing, Its A Grand Old Flag, deck'd out in a wreath of red, white mid blue stars She vv oro an American flag vest mid matching slurt She marched mid saluted sharply Anti m her hand she proudly wav cd mi American Dag 1 felt a pang of conscience Someit seemed a little too much like how, brain washing She had been in this country barely a year Could she ev on remember the Dag of her home-lhnc- P .And there was no denying tliis she had been taken against her will could still see her planted feet, still hear her screams as she vv as loath'd forcibly into our car She had told me repeatedly about her crushing disappointment that her parents vv tie foroigners, she knew this meant she had to leave her homeland, too remember her telling me how she wanted to stay in China I remember her confused misgivings vv hen it vv as time to leav e China on our return trip remember her si1 1 lence, made more pronounced by its stark contrast to her usual animated chatter, as she found herself immersed in a strange land vv hero no one spoke her language How will I ever forget her saying, no like ev eiytxxly ltxik like Mama, nobody ltxik like Jaclyn In China.
