Show nr - Emery County Progress Castle Dale Utah Tuesday March 18 2003 4 Emery County I u J 4-- f i By GARY ARRINGTON Sports reporter The Green Ri er Pirates finished their basketball season in Cedar Cuv with a point loss to Bov s Basketball tournament the Meridian Mongooses in the Utah State The Pirates started off their final week with a 3 home court victory out St .Joseph Against St Joseph, the Pirates got out to an early lead and ne er looked hat k as they made sure to get their place in the state tournament They led In nine points alter the first quarter and then cruised to a victory Green Rier now stood at 20-- 3 for the y eai Bowman Mitchell had the hot hand in this game as the senior lmished the game w ith 32 pi nuts Gabrin Ekker added 1 9 points, including fi e At Cedar City. Green liner's reward for finishing third in region was to face the I)ugwa Mustangs, a team that came into the tournament w ith an equally impi essne 2 rei oi d 2 alter the lirst quarter Dugway took the early lead in this close ball game, leading lead at the half After continuing to strong second quarter by the pirates gae them a lead by two points at the end of the third quarter, Dugway came out smoking in the fourth ictory and put the Pirates in the quarter and outscored Green Rier by nine to take a consolation bracket. Ekker, w ith 18 points, and Mitchell w ith a points w ere the leading scorei s in this game for the Pirates On day two of the tournament, the Pirates came out determined to stay m this tournament as they played a game against Bryce Valley They won 7 Green liner outscored their opponent in e ery quarter of this ictory Ekker again led the Pirates in scoring as he contributed 23 points Jake Met ham w as the second leading scorer as the sophomore had 16 points. Kedric Bay les with 12 points and Mitchell with 1 points w ere also in double figures for the game On day three, the Pirates played the Meridian Mongooses, a private school out of ITovo Meridian came into the game with a 2 record, but had lost to Rich High St hool on opening day by only two points, 1 Meridian High then got their first tournament w m cut m state Meridian got their second it ion as basketball on day two as they defeated Duchesne 1 o out a er the Pirates icton they squeaked Green River led after each of the first three quarters but could not hold oil the Mongooses m Mid just like that, the season the fourth quarter, as they were outscored by nine points 7 was over. This had been a good season for a good team that leatured seniois, juniors and sophomores in starring roles Next y ear should prov e to be just as exciting Mecham was the leading scorer in this game with 16 points Ekker with points and Larne Richards with 10 points were the only other Pirates to score in double figures Green River finished the season at 21-- 3 Team members are Kedric Bay les, Lance Richards.
