December 21, 1999 A statewide survey conducted by Valley Research indicates public confidence regarding Y2K has increased over the last six months. Only 20 percent of the people surveyed said they were concerned about Y2K computer problems, as compared to 25 percent in July and 31 percent in April. Even more confidence is expressed when Utahns are asked how secure they feel with their financial institution. The October survey of 500 Utahns statewide indicates 90 percent feel their money is secure, and fewer than 3 percent are worried about the safety of their money. When asked if they considered having extra money on hand as the century turns, less than one quarter were very or somewhat likely to withdraw extra funds. Another poll conducted by The Federal Reserve Bank has also been keeping close tabs on consumer attitudes toward Y2K. That national poll carried out by Gallup for the Fed and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. found "a declining percentage-opeople who are planning to take out additional cash for Y2K. Utahns have every reason to be confident that their money will be safe and secure, says Utah Bankers Association President Howard Headlee. The banks in the state have tested and retested, and have assured their customers that they are well prepared to handle any and every contingency, he said. Bankers in Utah and around the country report few signs of any cash hoarding to date, perhaps because of increasingly positive predictions by government and industry that 1999 will exit routinely. f learning leadership skills class offered at San Rafael Jr. High A On Nov. 1, a new class was begun at San Rafael Jr. High.
