Show Tuesday. December 21, 1999 5A Emery County Progress, Castle Dale. Utah The Good Old Days Eldon Miller, Progress Columnist The Tucker's effect upon the Clawson census Within a four month period, my grandmother and two of her daughters became widows. These three deaths had an unusual effect upon the little Emery County town of Clawson, a community that had no connection to the Tucker family up to that time. In September of 1927, my grandfather. Worth Tucker, hired on to help with some renovation work on the Yellowstone Lodge at Yellowstone Park. By the first of November most of the work was completed. With a winter storm approaching the workers, having a fear of being snowed in, hurriedly packed their belongings and climbed aboard a truck that would take them to the nearest town. Worth was killed when the truck accidently slid off the road. At home his wife, Florence Abby (Pulsipher), and their nine children waited, eagerly looking forward to his return in time for Thanksgiving. Instead, what arrived was a telegram which read, Worth Tucker dead. Where should we ship the remains? Four months later on the sixth of March, while visiting her widowed mother in Salt Lake, Julia Emmaline (Emma) Sanderson, my mother, received word that her husband had been in an accident while working on the job at the Utah Railroad Roundhouse in Helper. On her way home on the train she spotted an abandoned newspaper and picked it up to help pass the time, and to, hopefully, take her mind off her worrying. Instead, she found the shocking news that she, too, was a widow. She was 21 years old with three babies. Twenty-fiv- e days later, her oldest sister, Isabelle Ann Oviatt, lost her husband after a futile battle with a lingering illness. She was 26 years old with four children. Three very difficult and lonely years followed with numerous moves for each of the widows. Grandmother moved from one address in the Salt Lake area to an other. Emma, moved from Salt Lake to California. And Isabelle (Belle), having remarried, moved from Salt Lake to Clawson in Emery County (the Tuckers initial Utah area of residence). Belles new husband, Qrve Barney, owned a store and a farm in Clawson. Having a large plot of land in the heart of Clawson, they invited grandmother to bring her family to Clawson to live next to them. My grandmother agreed and in March of 1930, she and six of her nine children came to Clawson. Her sons built a nice home for them near the middle of tow'll. A year later; my mother; Emma, with her five children, also moved to Clawson, living in Orves old store. Thus, within a three year period, the town of Clawson increased its population by 20 as a result of these three widows with 17 of their 19 children, ages 1 to 26 years of age, living in Clawson. Kirtleys daughter, Donna, Florence Abby Tucker (standing to the right in light colored added one more to make it 21 new dress), and a portion of her offspring, who helped to increase on page 7A) the population of the small town of Clawson. ed Progress Bulletin Board The Emery County Progress welcomes your bulletin board items for publication.
