Utah Tuesday November 30 1999 18 Water Poster Contest winners named, Citizen Award for water educator presented to Eugene Johansen A cross section of young artists from around the state were honored at the 15th annual Water Education Awards Banquet held Nov 13, at the University of Utah. The theme for this years Young Artist Poster Con- test was WATER FOR PEOPLE." Elementary students throughout the state were invited to create a poster representing the water theme. The posters were then judged by the Utah Water Education Committee, who had some difficult choices to make Wmners were chosen in each grade level K-- and one winner was selected in each of the seven regions of the state. A Grand Prize winner was also selected from among the grade level winners. Several other awards were also presented at the banquet including: Citizen Award for Water Education to Eugene 6 Johansen. Known around Emery County as Mr. Water, Johanson was instrumental m the formation of the Emery Water Conservancy District, serving as its president since its Back row: Alexis Petersen, Kaitlin Reaves, Zachary Clement. Front row; Chantel! Cormier, Nikel Taylor. inception in 1961. During his tenure the district has thrived through various stages of the Upper Colorado River Project. He also served as a member of the Utah Water Resources Board from 1983 to 1935 where he participated m the development of over 1040 water resources projects Outstanding Water Educator 1999 to Rosalee Riddle a science teacher at Red Hills Middle School in Richfield. A teaching veteran of 27 years. Riddle also serves as the Science Coordinator for the Sevier School District. As a facilitator for Project Wet she loves using water as a topic for introducing her students to the scientific methods Water Education Special Service Aw ar$ to Leah Ann Lamb from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. As a member of the Water Conservation Forum, Lamb has served in many leadership roles including a recent stmt as Forum president A facilitator for Project Wet, she has been a driving force behind the Adopt a Water Body" program encouraging individuals to be involved m water resources in their commu- nities. The Grand Prize winner was Tanner Wayment. a third grade student at West Weber Elementary in Weber County w here his teacher is Cathy Stoker. Tanner and his family will enjoy a five day stay on a house boat at Lake Powell compliments of Aramark Leisure Services. They will also get a VIP tour of the Glen Canyon Dam, courtesy of the Bureau of Reclamation. Local Winners were: Kindergarten, Chantell Cormier Ferron Elementary', Region One Second Grade.
