Shapes are as follows: oval, pear, heart, marquise, emerald, baguette and brilliant. COLOR The Cemological Institute of America grades color starting with the letter I (colorless) through the alphabet to Z. According to Moshe, diamonds in the range are the most rare, and the differences between grades are extremely subtle. Each grade is progressively more yellow. In nature, diamonds come in all colors, ranging from pink and lavender to green, blue and black. Such stones have become popular for engagement rings, and rare colors are quite expensive. CLARITY Clarity has to do with the flaws, or inclusions, present in a diamond's interior. Inclusions are cracks, whitish dots and dark spots. External flaws are known as blemishes. The fewer inclusions and blemishes a stone has, the more its value. Flawless diamonds are very rare. Filled or enhanced stones must be identified as such. Although such means make a diamond appear flawless, they frequently weaken the stone C and make it subject to ture. frac- CARAT Carats have nothing to do bunwith furry, twitchy-nose nies. Carats refer to a diamond's weight. The term actually derives from an Arabic word for carob seeds, an ancient medium of exchange. There are 200 milligrams per carat. diamond weighs carat or more, and is purchased at a reputable retail outlet, it should come with a grading report from an independent grading laboratory, such as the CIA (Cemological If a 1 Institute of America). If it does not, insist the stone be graded. Such a report usually costs $150 per carat with a minimum of $75. WHERE TO SHOP? The Knot recommends asking friends or family members. Ask prospective jewelers how long they've been in business and check with your local Better Business Bureau. ''Deal only with jewelers who are ACS (American Cem Society) rated and have a CSA gemologist on staff," said Cindy Hobson of The Knot. "Ask the jeweler if they carry a stock of loose stones. If they don't, move on." A legitimate dealer should have no objection to having your diamond being appraised by an independent appraiser of your choice. Two months' salary or more deserves nothing less. Once appraised, you will want to insure. AND THE BAND PLAYS ON Traditionally, couples select a meaningful phrase to engrave on the inside of each other's wedding bands or engagement rings. Common is something like, "A.G. to M.N. Oct. 5, 1998 - eternally yours." Choices listed in Weddings for Dummies" include "May this circle be unbroken." It might be fun to go for something unique, something thats yours alone. Try a phrase from your favorite poem or song, or perhaps your pet names for one another. Sara Muller of San Diego inscribed her husband's ring: "My greatest blessing." Susan Goldstein-Jimenez and her husband, Martin Jimenez, of North Wales, Pa., selected from words songwriter David Broza. "My husband and share a common interest in this musical artist," said Susan. "Broza plays amazing guitar and sings in English, Spanish and Hebrew." One of Braze's songs, Take My Heart Home," became the couple's mutual favorite, hence Susan had the phrase, "You took my heart home, engraved on Martins wedding band. I QJorB 47 W.
