Show Emery County Progress OPINION Em EDITORIAL Reviewing past to secure future By Kevin Ashby Emery County Progress publisher President George Washington issued the following proclamation in 1789: Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and whereas both houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be ob- served by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. Now therefore do recommend and I as- of Novemsign Thursday, the twenty-sixtber next, to be devoted by the people of these states to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks for his kind care and protection of the people of this country, previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable h and rational manner in which we have been day. LETTERS National Christmas prize for Washington tree-anoth- er Editor: I realize that it is a mute point but i just cant help commenting on the National Christmas tree. Is it just me, or does Washington treat Utah like a private retreat for people who live on the coasts? The way outsiders comment on our state and our public lands I get the idea we should all move out of the state so HfiPlipn Utah can become one great big National Park. In short, we aje degrading the natural beauty of the land just by living here. The last thing I want to see in Emery County is another boom like Washington County has had, or the Wasatch Front, after all I live here in Emery County for a reason and it isnt for shopping convenience or health services. The National Christmas tree is just another prize that Washington has claimed from Utah and it no longer represents the hoped of the nation, unless the hopes of the nation are for us to move out. We are accused of being selfish and greedy, yet environmentalists would like to lock up huge areas for just them- tree from our beautiful mountain, and coverage in our local paper for at least four weeks. No matter what they say, that it is the tree for the people, from Montell Seely and Owen McClenahan were both very interesting, talking about some ofthe history of this place a lot of us call y County!! I know what they write about is not current News but it is fun to read, and learn of things from the past. It makes me grateful to live now, without the flies, etc. Please, you two historians, let us hear more from you. I would also like to sav what a good bunch of people we are to live the principal. The proposed increase in property tax revenues will come from the following sources: (a) $272,913.00 of the proposed increase will come from an increase in the property tax rate from .003739 to .003923. valued at $100,000 in Emery County which based on last year's property tax rate and budget paid $205.65 in property taxes would pay the following: A home (1) $205.65 if Emery County does not budget an increase in property tax revenue exclusive of new growth; and (2) $215.73 if the proposed increase in property tax rev- enues exclusive of new growth is adopted. Didnt we actively invite people to come and share our state with us, and enjoy its beauties as we have? Now all I get from the Sierra Club and Bruce Babbit is how we plan to plunder and rape the land for our own benefit, and they are in fact saving us from ourselves. I have lived in rural Utah for nearly all my life and it makes me sick to see the endless flow of human trash invading the real beauty of Utah and leaving their water bottles, sandals, and trash in general for the natives to clean up for the next weekend. You must realize of course that there wasnt a trash or conservation problem until the so called environmentalists came to lay sole claim to the land. The public lands of Utah are for ALL of US, and that means locals as well as tourists. Any reasonable and sane administration could see the benefit of multiple use policies. But as the Grand Staircase has taught us and history will prove our point, there will be no sane and reasonable land use policies from an administration that is getting closer and closer to total disregard for the Constitution of the United States of America. God Bless America, we are sure going to need it.
