Show 8A Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 7, 1995 forum STUDENTS OF THE WEEK AT GREEN RIVER HIGH SCHOOL (Continued from Page iA) dium and the basketball courts weekly, for months and months at a time, and yet cannot give an hour and a half of their time three or four times a year to support the music students at Emery High School. Have we digressed so far that only some students are important? Are only some activities worth attending in a show of support? The young people of today are tomorrow's leaders, teachers and parents. We strongly believe that all students deserve home town support of their activities, not just the athletic students!! ANDREA LUKE Andrea, daughter of Blaine and Mary Anne Luke, carries a 3.99 GPA. She is very active in the Pier Helpers program. She will be ap- Question? Where were the fellow teachers of Mr. Orwiii and Mr. Wilson? Every ball game we have ever attended has had Mr. Orwin and his pep band's support. What has happened to the support, respect and team work that should exist within a school district? Where was the administrative support of these teachers and perhaps more importantly, the students of EHS? Where were the school board members and the district office per- - pearing in the GRHS theatre production "Hello Dolly" and is the recent recipient of the Academic volleyball award. All-Sta- te sonnel? Where were the peers of these students? The entire school population supports the athletic teams at games. Where were the coaches and the members of these teams? We watch and cheer for each drill team exhibition and we support the cheerleaders in their efforts. Where were the members of the drill team and the cheerleaders? Can you imagine how respected EHS students could be if the young people of EHS supported each other in all activities? We would have a hard time being beaten in any competition with support for one another like that! Where were our government leaders? The youth city councils are making a contribution to our cities and towns. And finally, were all the parents of the 20 to 30 Emery County students in attendance to support their own children? How sad ifthere wasn't some representation from the families of each student. This lack of support was without a doubt the most embarrassing moment of our 22 years in Emery County. If this event had been held in Parowan, Delta or Richfield, hate to say it folks, but the halls would have been packed. Now we fully understand that all residents cannot be to every school function. However, there is an apparent inequity in our county that is affecting the of our most valuable asset; our young people. These music students have a talent, that if developed, can touch the lives of hundreds of human beings in their life span. Music enriches, strengthens, inspires and comforts. What a gift to carry and share! It won't matter if they become "out of shape" or get "too old," the joy and benefits of these talents is everlasting. With the lifelong potential of these abilities, should not we offer our utmost support of these excellent students in the same manner with which we support our athletic students? Richard Greenwood, Utah Highway Patrol, said, "This is the first time all the state's law enforcement . The campaign has the support of the Chiefs 5r ft of Police Association. PresiPolice Chief, dent, Roy City Junior Hammon said in a recent conference, "We see senseless tragedies all the time when a life was lost, which would have been spared, if only a seat belt were used." "MAKE IT SECOND NATURE" is more than an enforcement campaign. Its goal is to educate and increase awareness so individuals will choose to voluntarily make safety restraint use a habit. Public information and education officers will promote safety restraint use in their own. communities. Special events and promotions will occur throughout the state during the campaign. A special feature of "MAKE IT SECOND NATURE" is the emphasis placed on child safety seats. Child safety seats are complicated, and over 70 percent are used improperly. This misuse places the child in jeopardy. All public information and education officers have been trained in the proper installation and use of child safety seats. They will train the other officers in their districts. These trained officers will try to spot misuse and advise parents on the correct way to use their child safety restraint devices. The law in Utah states a child under two years of age must be in a child safety seat and children up to the age of eight must be in a child safety seat or a safety restraint. The law also states everyone over the age of eight should be in a safety restraint. Utah's law enforcement officers will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the law or the proper way to use your vehicle's safety rural Utah but that does not mean we have to be known by the classification of "hicks."
