Show Emery County Progress Tuesday, April 18, 1995 9 A Wildlife briefs Telephones at the Division of Wildlife Resources have been ringing steadily in recent weeks since the Utah Board of Big Game Control set 1995 hunt regulations. Hunters want to know more about the 1995 hunt and are especially anxious to get their 1995 big game hunting proclamations. There are many changes this year, and DWR biologists and editors have been scrambling to rewrite the rules and get the proclamation to the printer. They say the proclamation is still on schedule and should be available at DWR offices and through most wildlife license agents by May 5, the first day hunters can apply for the big game drawing. The application period for the drawing will be May 5 through May 25 this year , and the drawing will be July 10. Unsuccessful applicants will be able to buy tags and permits for the general season over the counter beginning July 17. In St. George last week, representatives from several state and federal wildlife and resource agencies signed the Virgin Spinedace Conservation Agreement, a historic document aimed at saving the proposed threatened Virgin spinedace without listing it under the Endangered Species Act. The spinedace is a small minnow native to the Virgin River basin in Utah, Arizona and Nevada. Spearheaded by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the conservation agreement and accompanying conservation strategy establishes agency commitments and actions needed to remove problems and threats to Virgin spinedace populations. Conservation actions will focus on the spinedace in 80 percent of its historic range. These include historic habitat, enhancing habitat, and mitigating for future projects in the basin. Sandhill cranes are moving through Utah in great numbers as they stop to refuel during their spring migration. "The sound of these birds is really haunting," says Ron Stewart, Northeastern Region information and education manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. "Even when they are far away, their call makes it seem like they are right next to you. You can imagine what a flock of 100 or so would sound like passing overhead." With a wing span, the majestic birds seem to play in slow motion as they fly overhead. The footprint left behind measures nearly four inches and resembles dinosaur tracks found in southern Utah sandstone. "When you see the birds jumping up and down that's part of their mating ritual," according to Stewart. "If all goes well, a pair of birds will mate for ot life."
