Show 8A Tuesday, April 18, 1995 Emery County Progress SPORTS Baseball team prepares for showdown in Helper against Carbon Dinos Relay team sets EH record CASTLE DALE- - As the first round of Region 11 baseball games winds up this week, and Carbon (2-Emery (3-find themselves in first and second place. This week the two teams square off in Helper on Tuesday, and Emery is hoping to put a little more distance between first and second CASTLE DALE- - The Emery High girls' track team took only six first places in its tri-me- et with Uintah and Carbon last Wednesday on the Emery track, but one of those wins resulted in a new school record. The medley relay team of Brandi Jackson, Marissa Natalie Swasey and set the record with Funk Kristy a time of 4:19.60. Jackson, a freshman, opened with a 200 Vip-perma- place. The Spartans are coming off an impressive win over Delta, 12-- n, the Dinos did get a 15-- 6 nonconference win over Wasatch on Tuesday to even its overall n, 100 meter- - Taylor, fourth; Richards, sixth. 1600 meter-H- . Last week the team cracked the top five in classification rankings at No. 4 while also adding an important Region 11 300 hurdles- - Ison, fifth; pez, sixth. High jump- - Leamaster, second; Behling, fifth. 3200 meter- - T. Ward, fourth; Turner, fifth. 200 meter- - ONeil- - sixth. Shot put- - Bott and Larsen, second (tie); Keele, fourth. sixth. 100 hurdles-Lopez, Discus- - Wilstead, third; Keele, fifth. Emery will participate at the Richfield Invitational on April 22. Emery standout to play at CSU Colorado State basketball coach Stew Morrill announced April 12 that Bryan Christiansen has signed a basketball letter of intent with the Rams program. Christiansen will enroll at Colorado State in the fall of 1995, and have three years of competitive eligibility remaining. He joins Colorado States program after having played one year at the College of Eastern Utah. He redshirted the 1994 season after sustaining a minor hip injury, then played in 1995. Bryan is potentially a very good WAC player, saidMorrill of the addition to his roster. He has good basketball skills combined with solid athletic ability. Christiansen is a 5 wing player who averaged 15 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in 1995. Christiansen helped Eastern Utah to a second-plac- e finish in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Colorado State finished with a 4 record in 1995 and advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament for the first time since 19489. We are excited about the returning players we have in our program, said Morrill. With the addition of Bryan to the team, we feel there will be a great competitive situation at the wing position. Lo- team scores were kept, the Emery Spartan boys' track team held its own against two tough 3A opponents in a home meet April 12. Carbon and Uintah provided formidable competition for the Spartans in this tune-u- p meet before Easter break. Emery garnered nine first place finishes in the 17 events. Senior Bret Guymon led the way with three individual first place finishes while also participating in two winning relays. Guymon won the 110 hurdles, the 400 meter run, the 300 hurdles and then joined Kyle Beagley, Brad Wagoner and J eff Larson in winning the medley relay The senior was also part of the winning 1600 meter relay team with Eric Funk, Garrett Snow and Jody from the meet: Rasmus110 hurdles-Chri- s sen, third, Ryan Bishop, fourth; and Brooks Gordon, sixth. 100- - Aaron Visser, second; Mike Spinney, fifth. 1600-Jod- y Cox, third; Leeon Jeffs, fourth; Zac Thomas, The 7. 8-- 5. Heather Ward, also a senior, won the 3200 meter in a time of 12:57.30, and Andee Larsen was the winner in the discus with a toss of 101T". The Emery 1600 relay team also took first. No team scores were kept, but results for other Emery participants follow: last Tuesday in Castle 1, Dale while Carbon had a region bye last week. Pitcher Mary Brinkerhoff picked up the win for Emery, allowing nine runs on 10 hits- - two of which were home runs. She had seven strike outs and gave up just three walks. After falling behind 0 in the first inning, Emery cut the lead in half in the second when Misty Warner walked and later scored. Delta took a 1 lead in the third, but Emery scored twice in the bottom of the inning as Monica Cox and Heidi Kay each singled and scored to cut the lead to Brinkerhoff got two strike outs in the top of the fourth as Delta went down in order, and then Emery took the lead by scoring five runs on a single by Cox and a double by Brinkerhoff to go with four walks. At that point, Emery 2-- 3-- 1, 3-- 0. 2-- 4-- 4-- 3. held an lead. 8-- 4 Delta cut the lead to 6 in the fifth, but Emery came back with a pair of runs off three more walks and a single by Kay.
