During the year, skills with hula hoops, lumi sticks, tinikling, jump rope and ribbons are taught. She integrates these routines along with a chorally recited School Day Rap" into a program performed on April 19. All parents, grandparents and relatives were invited to attend. The ribbon dance was a black light number sung to the song Care For Another. This number proved very effective with the shirts glowing with 2001 and the white ribbons flowing and dancing in the black light. Michelle was among 350 outstanding high school journalists nationwide attend- ing the conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council in cooperation with the National Press Club. With more than 25 seminars and 40 speakers, the Washington Journalism Conference gave Michelle a firsthand look at the news industry from leaders in the fields of print, radio and television journalism. Students heard from with and worked from CNN, journalists Time Magazine, UPI, USA Today, Voice of America and The Washington Post, and side-by-si- de participatedin hands-o- n work- shops ranging from The Art of Interviewing to Life as an Overseas Journalist. Michelle met with key from govern- spokespersons ment and the private sector. During a visit to Capitol Hill, the students participated in a question and answer session with members of Congress on the Floor of the House of Representatives. Michelle also met with Sen. Robert Bennett, Sen. Orrin Hatch, and Rep. Bill Orton andor members of their staffs. Students interviewed Dr. Valerie Setlow, acting director of the National AIDS Program at the Department of Health and Human Services, on the topic Increasing Public Awareness: The AIDS Crisis.
