Certainly anyone can go to a Shakespeare play without knowing anything about it and still enjoy it. But when you have some idea of the plot, characters, themes and other elements of the play, it can be an even more rewarding experience. Then they had to list the emotions and motivations for their character for each scene. And finally, they had to memorize in-dep- th their part in Shakespearean English. Some of the actors had over 200 lines of Shakespeare verse to memorize, but they all have done very well, the director said. Local voters also gave incumbent Democrat Rep. Bill Orton 2,419 votes while Republican challenger Richard Harrington received 1,337 votes. Emery County also went with Republican Mike Leavitt in the governors race as he received 1,921 votes to Democrat Stewart Hansons 1,068. Independent candidate Merrill Cook actually outpolled Hanson with 1,365 votes. In the presidential race, Emery County went with George Bush, giving the incumbent 1,622 votes to Mr. Clintons 1,338 votes. Ross Perot did well in Emery County with 1,127 votes. Bo Gritz received 352 votes in the county as well. In other state elections, Emery County supported Graham over Bums for attorney general, 2,302 to 1,914 (Graham was the statewide winner); Allen over Bla'k for state auditor, 2,219 to 1,?J2 (Allen was the statewide winner); and Monson over Alter for state treasurer, 2,272 to 1,730 (Alter was the statewide winner). Emery County also sup- ported Mike Dmitrich over David Adams for Utah Senate District No. 27, 2,340 to 1,903; Potter over Matthews for state representative District No. 69, 345 to 340; Johnson over Porter for state representa- - tive District No. 70, 1,382 to 380; Anderson over Nakai for state representative District No. 71, 740 to 405. The county voters also joined the majority of voters statewide in defeating Initiative A, parimutuel betting, 2,463 voting against to 1,858 voting in favor. On election night, the polls closed at 8 p.m. Right at that hour, results started to come into the clerks office. Results from Emery, Clawson and Castle Dale came in first, but by 9 p.m. all results were in. As the results came into the courthouse, they were put on a blackboard in the foyer since the computer was temporarily out of order. Results were also televised over Channel 50 on the local UHF network. Several people came to the courthouse to watch the results come in. Clerk Bruce Funk was pleased with the way the election results were handled. He said it was amazing that the election judges could work so quickly and efficiently in a general election as big as this one.
