Show w T Tuesday, September 24, 1991 7A Emery County Progress Manti elk regulations move into 3rd year Beginning in 1989, a new elk hunting regulation was initiated on the Manti unit to satisfy the wishes of hunters and wildlife enthusiasts who wanted to see more mature bulls. At that time, the bull elk harvest was restricted to the taking of yearling bulls only. and By protecting older bulls, Division of Wildlife Resources biologists hope to give a certain percentage the chance to mature and develop maximum antler size. The regulation remains in the third year this and appears season hunting effect for to be working. Biologists and hunters report seeing an increasing number of branch-antlere- d bulls afield. The harvest of mature bulls will eventually resume under a limited permit system. Each year a certain number of sportsmen will have the opportunity to draw out for a special permit, authorizing them to take a mature bull The Manti will not become a limited entry unit, however. It will continue as an "open area" with the yearling bull only regulation in force. 0 Under the program, all of bulls percent yearling 70-8- are expected to be harvested. Approximately 20-3- 0 percent will survive and carry over to subsequent years. These will have the opportunity to grow up and provide a limited harvest for trophy hunters, x'he system will assure that sufficient mature bulls will be left for breeding and a healthy sex ratio will be maintained in value as an open bull unit will be preserved for those hunters, who are content with a yearling bull hunt. Depending on the cooperation of Utahs sportsmen, this program will provide more and bigger bulls in the herd and eventually more trophy class bulls in the harvest. At the same time, the Mantis Sportsmen are encouraged to report any violations they see to a conservation officer, highway patrol dispatcher or by calling the poaching the herd. Compliance is the key, however. If even a small minority of hunters gun down a branch-antlere- d bull during the yearling bull only hunt, the success of the program will be reduced. hot-lin- e: Rewards up to $1,000 will be paid for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person unlawfully taking any elk. A wildlife bus will be stationed at the top ofFairview Canyon during the 1991 elk hunt to provide sportsmen with a convenient means of reporting wildlife violations. Officers will also be conducting roadblocks checking stations at various locations in an effort to apprehend wildlife violators and gather harvest data. Hunters are advised to scout aspen oakbrush and ponderosa pine oakbrush habitats early in the season. Pinionjuniper types will produce more bucks later on. Good choices for a hunt include Black Ridge, Chicken Creek, Beaver Creek, Taylor Flat, Brumley Ridge and Warner Lake. Hunting in the Dolores Triangle will be closed to all but limited entry rifle and muzzleloader permit holders, who can expect to take some nice bucks if bad weather moves them from Colorado into Utah. The best hunting is within a few miles of the border in pinionjuniper and sagebrush. Best access is through Grand Junction. The herd on the Henry Mountains has been on the decline, after suffering from the drought of the past three years. There appear to be a few more yearling bucks than last year, but hunting prospects remain guarder. Hunter success in 1990 was 34 percent. Spring Creek, Peters Point, Foy Reservoir and South Peak The Board of State Lands and Forestry has voted to ter- ited entry permit holders. Last year, 94 percent of all rifle hunters scored on a buck. The rifle season opens on Oct. parks on Dec. 31, 1991, if progress on an exchange is not made. In May, the board withdrew trust lands inside the national parks from sale or lease to enable the Division of State Lands and Forestry to pursue an administrative exchange of those lands. The division is working with the governors office, 5 and runs through the 15. Officials evaluate damage Animal Damage Management (ADM) program in order to develop a long range proposal. Low fawn numbers in any one year translate to low buck numbers and poor hunting the next. As conditions vary geographically, so does the forecast. Hunting on the north Manti is expected to be harder than last year, which had a 27 percent rate of success for buck license holders. Hunters will find fawn production. The Book Cliffs is an open area during the general rifle season, but may only be hunted by limited entry permit holders during the muzzleloader season. Sportsmen will find better hunting in the mountain brush of side canyons until deer move onto winter range. Thereafter, pinion juniper and sagebrush will hold the bucks. varsity Emery junior 32-pounds Lehi, 0 A 32-- 0 week at last Lehi win over the has Spartan kept Emery JV football record unblemished as the team now stands The team will travel to at Uintah this Thursday. The board directed division staff to pursue a rapid resolution of exchange negotiations before the December deadline. Most often, mental health practitioners focus on the chaotic, overdependent nature of a relationship that leaves both partners feeling empty and angry at the same time. There may be a pattern in which one partner gees himself or herself as the others caretaker. Feeling as if a partner would not survive alone is a powerful role. Everyone needs purpose in life, and this kind of negative enabling relationship fills that need for many.
