Show Y Y 6A Emery County Progress Tuesday, September 24, 1991 SPORTS Golfer Lady Spartans defeat Lehi, fall to Wasatch records Emery school record FERRON A school record was turned in by Emeryjunior golfer Bo Shortt at last weeks region golf meet at Millsite. Shortt finished the meet with a 78 which Coach Duane Merrell says is the best score ever by an Emery golfer. The program is now in its third year, and Shortt has been one of the top golfers on the team since he was in ninth grade. In addition to setting a school record with the 78, the score was also the lowest posted at the meet which was held Sept. 19. That score helped the finSpartans to a third-plac- e ish with a team score of 372. Uintah took top honors with a 338 while Union was second with a 371. Following Emery were Wasatch, 373; Carbon, 379; and Lehi, 383. Coach Merrell said that the team has improved a lot this season and is consistently finishing in third or fourth place at region meets. The Emery winner came off service by Chrissy Childs who got help on a block by Stilson and Wilstead. After the Tuesday match at Emery, the girls traveled to Wasatch on Thursday. However, the team was a little banged up with Tasha Bradley, Rochelle Atwood and Kris Wilstead, all starters, nursing injuries. We were just a step slow and didnt get our hands on the hits we would normally get, Coach Nancy Martinez said "The best we can hope for is that we will be healthy for 8-- the region tournament in October. The sophomores also split their games, defeating Lehi 15-- 5 and 15-- 5 while losing to Wasatch, However, vthe Emery JV and sophomore teams did well at a JV tournament on Sept. 14 at Emery. Each team defeated East Carbon, Green River and 15-1- 3, 17-1- 5. Carbon. Spartans share first after win at Lehi Although the season is still young, the Emery Spartans picked up an important road win at Lehi last week to grab a share offirst place in Region 7. The Spartans used a balanced attack to defeat the Pioneers Elsewhere in the region, Uintah, Emerys homecoming opponent this week, defeated Carbon 0 in Vernal while Union also got a home win over Wasatch, 13-At Lehi, Emery opened the scoring in the first perod on a 27-1- 4. 9-- 7. pass play from Derek Stilson to running back Joe Mireles. The Spartan defense held the usually potent Lehi offense to just 176 total yards Sophomores win two games against Lehi, Richfield CASTLE DALE The Emery sophomore football team picked up a pair of wins last week. The Spartans defeated Lehi 25-- 8 on Thursday and Richfield 18-- 7 on Saturday. Each game was played on the Emery field. Against Lehi, Emery scored in the first quarter on a pass from Dean Stilson to Collin Tennant. Later in the period, Matt Ball recov- 9-- 13-1- :nuL Delta was the scene for rodeo action this past weekend. The Emery contestants suffered from a series of mishaps. For most of the members nothing seemed to go right. Two members did succeed though in breakaway roping. Burke was the leading receiver with five catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. runner X-coun- try takes 1st at Lehi LEIII Emery crosscountry runners finished in Cx second place at a meet held near Lehi High School Sept 18, 1991. Sophomore runner Hugh Christiansen was the overall meet winner of the which included Emery, Lehi and Union. The Spartans finished in second with 34 points while Lehi was first with 27. Union also competed and finished with 80 points. In addition to Christ- iansens impressive finish, the Spartans a 25-- 8 lead at the Emery had several other runners finish in the top 20 (53 competed). They were: Ryan half. Later in the game, Stilson connected with Robertson again, this time on a scoring pass covering 45 yards. The defense held the Cats to just one touchdown at the game ended 18-- 7 for Emery. The sophomores will play at Uintah on Thursday. However, the meet will be in Ferron and will follow a course from Millsite to the city park.
